Was recently watching Shavers vs Ron Lyle (a real barnburner if you haven't seen it) and was thinking how Brewster might have done in Lyle's place. Both were similar in many respects, brute force brawlers with great chins, great power, flawed defences and dogged tenacity that allowed them to walk through ridiculous firepower to get to their man (Shavers in Lyle's case, Wlad in Brewster's). The only question is whether Brewster has enough toughness, both physical and mental, to weather Shavers's onslaught and get the job done. I think he does, personally, though I expect at least one knockdown apiece and a lot of shaky moments before the end. Both men were so inconsistent, however, that I wouldn't be the least surprised if this went the other way. I just think Brewster's grit and determination at his peak were just a bit too much for Shavers to overcome. What's your own breakdown, chaps?
Brewster aside from his laugh riot ko of Wlad has not much to shout about. Shavers faced the best of his time from Lyle to Holmes to Ali. He usually lost to his best opponents. He also probably came the closest to stopping Ali. In this hypothetical bout it's a question of who gets hit solidly first. I would say if Brewster is hit with Shavers best early it's over as Shavers would have the energy to go all out for the ko. As the bout progresses Shavers will become less effective. Brewster could hit and Shavers chin was not the best. The more proven hwt is Shavers so he would be my pick however it's really a pick em fight.
I think Brewster could do it. Shavers got KO'd waaaay more than Brewster and lost to some woeful opponents. Lamon could absorb some hellish punishment as proved in his win over Wlad even though he didn't hit quite as hard as Shavers. I think toughness > firepower here. I lean towards Lamon in this one.
I would be inclined to favor Brewster based on his chin. In many ways Brewster is the Shavers figure of his era. Most people he fought said that he hit them the hardest.
Good, interesting matchup and should be a close fight, but this seems like the most likely outcome to me.
Not denying Shavers had very heavy hands but most of his ko's were against today is what considered small HW. Brewster was 6'2 227 lbs who power was underestimated 35 wins 30 ko's and was quite durable. Brewster would trade with Shavers but Shavers would punch himself out and Brewster win by ko in 6.
noone ever said brewster was the hardest hitter they fought. brews is a decent journeyman, not some superpowered guy.
It is a good match up and to be honest it's a hard pick. But going to go for shavers in a short blast out.
Brewster hit plenty hard. I think there are very few HW's that could take flush shots from him and remain vertical. I don't think that Shavers is among them. Simply put, Shavers has a small edge in power but Brewster has a big edge in chin. Shavers could take it, but the more I think about it the more this fight favours Lamon imho.
