There was a journeyman who used to post round here who'd fought the who's who of late nineties/early two thousands heavyweights who claimed that Brewster hit him the hardest. Make of that what you will.

Personally I'd consider Corrie Sanders more suited to be the Shavers role of his generation. Tons of people said he hit with insane power.

Brewster had a great chin (or more precisely great mental fortitude) but he could be rocked and dropped. Etienne had him reeling all over the place in the first round of their epic slugfest (best HW round in history, IMO) and Lyakhovich nearly had him down as well. Thing is Brewster just wouldn't stay down. It took that Nordic freak towards the tail end of his career to put him out for good, since not even a rejuvenated Wlad could get the job done despite catching him with clean right hands that would have felled an elephant.

As hard as Shavers punched I can't see him doing enough damage to Brewster to keep him down for the count, though I have no doubt he gets him down at some point.

Right. I'm guessing (and it's a bit of a wild one) that you think I'm a Klitschko fanatic. Not sure how that follows from what I said earlier, but I'm also guessing (and this isn't such a leap of logic) that you have major psychological issues.

I mentioned Sanders because there are a number of fighters on record as having claimed he was the hardest puncher they fought, namely Rahman and Michael Sprott. Going back to the Shavers comparison.

    You have someone better?

More than one fighter is on record as saying this.

I am aware that Brewster was not a world beater, but lack of power was not one of his shortcomings.

There is a video on YouTube where a fighter states Brewster hit him the hardest. However I remember when Shavers fought Ali and the numerous times he had Ali out on his feet via single punches. Ali stated Shavers hit him the hardest.....that's a very hard puncher. The single uppercut that koed Ellis and the hellacious tight combinations that destroyed Norton. On his best night Shavers has to be considered the favorite.

Lol the only person that fought both Shavers and Foreman and still said Shavers punched harder was Ron Lyle. Lyle was also knocked out by Foreman so you can't hold him to be telling the truth. It is like Larry Holmes saying Butterbean hit harder than Tyson. Does that make it true?

Also I never heard anybody say Brewster was the hardest puncher they faced.

Ali was never hit flush by Foreman. So Ali had no clue to how hard Foreman's best punches were. Ali was almost knocked out by 1 punch by Henry Cooper. Frazier had Ali down with one punch. Shavers fought a past his peak out of shape Ali and landed his best punch and couldn't knock him down. So you can't believe everything a boxer said.

Kind of like I just typed. Holmes said Butterbean punched harder than Tyson. He also said Frazier fought harder than Tyson even though he never faced Frazier. Holmes also stated at one time that Butterbean punched harder than George Foreman even though he never faced George.

In one interview James Tillis was talking about punching power and said Shavers hit him the hardest. Which is funny since guys like Tim Witherspoon and Tommy Morrison blew him away in 1 round. Yet he had nothing to day about their punching power.

Black...issue is I lived through that era. Watched all these bouts live including their buildup and aftermath. Ali was hurt more vs Shavers than any other fighter he ever faced. Ali did not need to tell us that in order to realize it as the truth.

It's another complete myth that Ali was never hit flush by Foreman. Ali was hit numerous times flush most notably at the end of round one with Ali's back to the camera Foreman breaks through Ali's guard and lands with all his might a left hook right hook to Ali's unprotected body. Foreman later said these were the kind of punches that would take the fight out of an ordinary fighter. In round two Foreman landed a straight right on Ali's chin that the ringside commentator stated hurt Ali although watching the bout you could not determine if Ali was hurt at all. It's interesting that during Ali's two most critical bouts....Foreman and Frazier 3 one would be hard pressed to point to a time where Ali was visibly hurt. Two lone exceptions which I've only determined after many times watching both fights:

Against Foreman - beginning of round 7 Ali gets thumbed and cowers. Spends most of the rest of the round recovering.

Against Frazier in Manila - Round 11 mid round Frazier lands a very short left hook to Ali's head. Announcers miss the punch as Frazier tees off on Ali as his arms drop. Incredibly seconds later Ali fires back with a two handed attack that evens up the round and turns the battle tide. Fraziers frustration was apparent after the fight when he stated.. "He took punches that would have fell the walls of a city and he just stood there".

I think it was Marcus Rhode who stated that, though I could be mistaken.

I watched the Shavers Ali fight for the first time in its entirety a short while back, and it's astounding how often Shavers had Ali on rubber legs. Ali really took a hellacious beating that night and was very lucky to get the decision in my opinion. Shavers completely battered him.

Brewster isn't in that same ballpark of power, but he was definitely a hard puncher in his own right, and had the toughness to withstand almost any amount of punishment in a wild shootout. That's what would make the difference here, I feel, and get him the win.

There was no controversy after the Ali Shavers bout. It was generally agreed that Shavers in an effort to save his stamina started coming on too late in the bout to be able to post a decision win. Shavers strategy was to conserve himself and turn the tables on Ali late. He did just that but did not count on Ali's toughness which got him through the last 3-4 rounds.

At the very end of round 13 or 14 Shavers hit Ali on the button with a right and you could see he was just out on his feet. Only the ropes supported him.
