They are either ****ing insane or completely clueless about the sport. Watch the fight again yourself. I've did just that. Shavers won, it's as clear as daylight. Or were those idiots giving rounds to Ali for hitting Shavers's guard ?!?? In the same way those ******ed judges gave rounds to Leonard against Hagler ?!?
Leonard vs Hagler was close and this was also just a fight between Shavers and a very, very gone Muhammad no need to be such a diva if Earnie won would it matter?
Yes, Ali was clearly past his best here. And yes, a prime Ali would have easily won. But this version of Ali was gifted an undeserved win. And this win partially sustains his reputation.
This was The Last Hurrah, Ali IMHO deserved the decision but should have retired and never fought again.
Teddy Brenner saw the decline and said he would never promote an Ali fight at the Garden again. That 15th round belongs to the ages. Earnie was about to go.
First, I’d like to second the shoutout for this channel which I stumbled upon a little while back. Among other fights, it has a very nice enhanced HD version of Louis v Savold. The Bomber older, slower but still with sound technique and a good measure of the old TNT in his fists. As to Ali v Shaver. I thought Ali won. I would like to look at it again but having the time is the problem. I often hear/read comparisons between the right hand that dropped Holmes and the punches Ali took from Earnie. The whistling right hand Ali took in round 2 that caused Ali to stumble back and hold on to the rope, if not quite equal, was close to enough to the one that decked Larry for my money. While the punch was close enough in power, Ali wasn’t effected anywhere near like Larry was - certainly Ali didn’t hit the deck and recuperated very quickly. Ali also ate so many more flush shots from Shavers during the fight than Holmes did - Earnie’s single bombs were more dramatic and impressive than any single punch by Ali but I though Muhammad’s overall output and connections clearly exceeded Earnie’s and of course Ali poured it on in the final round and nearly put Shavers out. Sometimes in scoring, it’s easy to make the mistake of measuring a fighter’s performance against his younger, better self - rather than against his opponent in absolute terms. Hagler might’ve suffered for this v Leonard, because in relative terms to the themselves and their own context, Ray looked great and Marv appeared ordinary - but in absolute terms it was still an extremely close fight. So, while Ali was a far cry from his best, I still think he beat Earnie - one article that came out at just after the fight said that prime Ali would’ve used Earnie’s head like a speed bag, of course, I agree.
Whether or not we agree with the scoring, I commend @White Bomber for putting his cards on the table and doing the work of publicly scoring the fight.
How did you score the fight ?! Which rounds did you give to Ali and which ones to Shavers ?! In the best case scenario, Ali won 5 or 6 rounds. Personally for me he only won 4.
Try watching it at night, instead of a movie. Score each round and share it with us. I strongly disagree. Against Holmes, Shavers telegraphed his punch with full leverage and bodyweight behind it. It was an overhand right that landed flush on Holmes's face. Against Ali, he did not. Ali threw a jab, Shavers slipped it and countered with a straight right. You cannot generate the same power with a counter shot since you cannot leverage your entire bodyweight behind it. Agreed. And that is why Shavers won, he landed 10-15 good punches, that did damage. But here comes the thing that I think you overlooked. While Ali did have a high output at times, almost all of his shots hit Shavers's guard. So they are useless, they don't count. Punches are supposed to do damage, or at least to land clean. Shavers edged Ali like 3 to 1 in terms of clean shots landed and around 5 to 1 in terms of power punches landed. And yes, Shavers was staggered a bit in the last round, probably due to fatigue, but 1 round doesn't change the outcome of the fight. Completely agree with this. A prime Ali would have indeed destroyed Shavers, but he lost this match.
I saw an interview with Shavers. He said that when the fight ended, he thought he'd won and felt he was robbed. Later on, while watching film of it and scoring it himself, he ended up giving it to Ali by one point.
