At some point, between the first and last round, Shavers will connect with Primo s chin and he won't need to drop him 11 times (see Baer v Carnera)
Baer wanted to prologue the fight so badly he knocked the guy down 7 times in the first three rounds. I'm plugging my video here so you two can point out to me what more Baer could have done in the early rounds to finish the fight. Knockdowns begin at 4:50 and the bell to end the third rings at 11:28 This content is protected
To be fair, Primo rarely put weight behind his punches so I doubt he'd have the punching power to consistently give Earnie frights. Primo's best weapon was his jab and his surprising mobility which was likely on display best against Louis. I'm not sure how long he could move around Shavers without paying for it.
Shavers had no stamina...was a lousy finisher...couldn't put away past his prime Ali and Holmes...never had a KO past the 7th round...and didn't carry his power into the later rounds! a That's all you need to know about Ernie Shavers....Oh yeah...he was KO'd in one round by Jerry Quarry! Talk about overrated...
Carnera was never the best heavyweight in the world. In his 1 year reign , Schmeling was no 1 and Baer no 2 ,as soon as either got him in a ring he was done. Baer stopped Schmeling and put then put an end to Carnera's facile claims.
Halfway into the 2nd Baer takes his foot off the gas and walks away ,he does this several times during the fight. It's plain to see.
He took the foot off the gas after flooring the opponent 6 times in two rounds, or was it that he was pacing himself after that? After scoring the knockdowns in round 2 he caught his breath for a while and then started throwing single rights or lefts to catch Primo unaware, as seen at 7:06 and 7:13. The argument is simply not supported by the film. If the proof that Max kept Carnera around because he was goofing, well, he was goofing in every fight, the nickname was Madcap Maxie for a reason. He was waving to the crowd while sat on the canvas after Louis floored him, did he have that one in the bag too? What about the Braddock fight? He pulled identical stunts to the ones he pulled in the Carnera fight, and yet, he didn't have that fight under control either.
Max Baer had million dollar chops as a fighter but that is meaningless when you have a two-cent head.
