Earnie Shavers the Acorn who many rate as the hardest hitting heavyweight of all time against a prime Merciless Ray Mercer who destroyed Tommy Morrison you make your picks and tell why you chose that fighter
In a way I see this fight going abit like the Morrison bout. Earnie could box a little when he wanted too and I can see him ahead going into the mid rounds as was Tommy. Somewhere he will land something really telling and then let it all hang loose. Ray will survive and then hammer on Earnie until he's done, maybe similar to the way Tommy went out.
good fight, Mercer isn't getting knocked out by Shavers, but shavers might tire as would mercer. this isn't going the distance
A more classy Shavers/Cobb springs to mind. Ernie being nearer his peak, but still losing as Mercer is at least a level above a Tex Cobb, but it would be a fun fight.
so then everybody is going with Mercer and I agree his chin will keep him surviving long enough to survive shavers onslaught and with shavers i think it was more of his sometimes lack of stamina then his chin that failed him (expections being the fight with ali where he still showed some power in the later rounds)
Mercer because he has the better jab and boxing ability and size as well and his own power and set up his punches better, he is just the overall better fighter, of course Shavers can end it all with one punch though.
Mercer pounds the heck out of Shavers for a 1st round TKO. Shavers gets beat worse than he does vs. Tyson. Mercer just doesn't know when to quit.
I think Mercer’s Stamina and durability most likely prevails over Shavers’ tremendous power. Not guaranteed of course as anything can happen when you have two men winging their hardest shots at close range. But the probability of Earnie tiring and then getting bombarded with Mercer’s hard flurries seems like the most plausible scenario.
