Earnie Shavers vs. Sam Peter

Kinda like Tyson when he lost to Douglas... Oh wait, the excuse doesn't apply to him.

 

Do you really think Sam Peter could go life and death with a late 70s Holmes?. Not a chance .wouldn't see the fith rnd total mismatch.

 

So Holmes stops Peter far sooner than either of the Klitschkos could in three fights? Bold prediction. Either way though, doesn't have much bearing on how Peter and Shavers would fare against each other.

 

Sam was a big lump strong slow not hard to hit .if shavers lands a big shot its good night. He could also hurt shavers but it's more likely shavers lands first.

 

Peter had a little countering ability and head movement. It looked sloppy most times, but it let him get shots in on Maskaev and Wlad.

Would you agree that Peter also hits extremely hard? That Shavers wasn't particularly hard to hit either? That Peter was a big, sturdy guy who could withstand punishment?

Peter was limited but you guys describe him like he was Grimace or Barnie or something.

Shavers didn't go life and death with him either. The knockdown was the only thing he did in that bout which made it memorable and that had just as much to do with Holmes' being complacent as it did anything Earnie crafted himself. Earnie lost pretty much all the other rounds. And I don't think Holmes beats Peter with much less difficulty than Wlad did. Sam took a prime Klitscko the distance and dropped him three times.. And Klit had more power to hurt Peter with than Larry did.. Couple that with the fact that Peter had a lethal right hand which was Holmes' weakness and I think it might be a tough fight. Holmes was dropped, staggered and taken the distance against plenty of men who weren't supposed to trouble him..And it amazes me how Peter is so readily chalked up by so many people around here as a walk in the park.

 

Well if Shavers says that's the reason he lost then it must be true!

Unlike Tyson, Shavers is not one to make excuses. That was also the heaviest he weighed in his career up to 1978.

 

He DID make an excuse. He called being off for six months a "layoff." As if that were any significant period of time. Tyson had only seen 93 seconds of ring action within the entire previous year before facing Douglas.

 

Good post. I can't see how people argue Peter didn't hit hard or have a good chin. Those are his defining attributes, along with his size. :yep I mean you just have to see him winging those punches to know there's serious (if inaccurate) power behind them.

 

Klit was sparked by journey men Holmes wasn't.thats the bottom line.so Peter dropping Vlad is no biggie.Holmes would have outclassed Peter and I think Ernie beats him to the draw and stops him.
