That fight actually finished Ali, it was his last great effort and Shavers had Ali in serious trouble more than once. Spinks would have never survived that.

Muhammad Ali was already significantly diminished by the time he met Earnie Shavers. He arguably needed help from the officials the year before in his rubber match with Norton and Jimmy Young. Five months after facing Shavers he would lose to Michael’s older brother who in hindsight was viewed as the lesser of the two Spinks’.

while Earnie’s power would make him a serious threat, I don’t typically favor a fighter on the basis of landing “ a single big punch. “ Spinks was far more talented, skilled, durable and mobile. And at heavyweight he stood 6’2” with weight ranging from 199-212, leaving Shavers with no real advantage in size

This obviously could but wouldn't happen, as spinks was a master pugilist.

I thought Spinks was 6-2. But I just think Spinks uses distance better than Shavers and more movement. I think he would time Shavers and out outpoint him until Shavers starts gasping for air.

Michael Spinks was kind of like Bob Foster, he was a very dominant World Light Heavyweight Champion, with one exception, Foster lost to heavyweights, while Spinks moved up successfully to win the IBF title from an aging Larry Holmes. Earnie Shavers had the power to either kayo most heavyweights or rattle them. Jerry Quarry took out Shavers in one round on Dec 14 1973, Spinks knocked out people at 175 lbs, but struggled at heavyweight. He was not a natural heavyweight like Quarry. Spinks could drag Earnie into deep waters to accomplish a victory but highly unlikely. Earnie tags Michael with that bone rattling right hand, takes out Spinks in round 3, after several clinching rounds by Spinks.

It was a brutal beating. Those full power rights were frightening.

Spinks wasn`t that good at heavy and Shavers hand speed was underated, he had a reach advantage too.

Larry Holmes was also a genuine Heavyweight and so was Gerry Cooney, are we just going to forget that Shavers got dismantled by Gerry Quarry who is barely over 200 pounds ? Sometimes Quarry entered the ring below significantly below 200 pounds which puts him at Cruiserweight in those cases. Thats not a genuine heavyweight. People underestimate spinks because he lost to Mike Tyson but Tyson would put Shavers in a bodybag as well. Spinks win over old Holmes is better than anything Shavers has ever accomplished.

Shavers is a murderous puncher but that is it, he is incredibly overrated. He has lost to multiple bums in his Career
