Shavers could hit...sure...but he was inaccurate...had problems with his stamina...rarely did he carry his power into the later rounds...and he wasn't able to come up with the big punch when he needed to in some important fights...
I would never call Shavers featherfisted, but I do belive his power is over rated when compare to other greats. Louis, Marciano, Tyson, even Jeff and Dempsey were able to get the kos over the elites, Shavers outside of Norton felled to do that imo.
The blogger's argument that Shavers was overrated as a puncher is pathetic. He/she should know better than to make those claims. Everyone -- including Shavers's opponents -- acknowledge that he was a monstrous puncher. On the other hand, it is true that Shavers received a huge build-up early in his career, and that two or three dozen of his KO's occurred against woefully overmatched opposition...tomato cans.. But then again, most top guys got build-ups of this sort, so maybe it doesn't matter.
