Makes sense. I honestly find the times I hurt my hand or wrist is when I don't commit to the power. Like if I'm really tired and throw a lazy punch. If I have a sore knuckle, I'll hit the bag really hard until I can't feel it, and it doesn't seem to cause any further damage. Basically my hands are the best when I'm landing clean power punches.
That's the case for everyone's hands, when you're tired and not throwing proper technique is when there's the greatest likelihood of injuring yourself in practically any athletic endeavour. Winning's NG2 knuckle pads are really good if you've got sore knuckles, lots of pro fighters just wear them as standard.
What are you hitting the bag with? Bag gloves/boxing gloves/ounces? Only do knuckle push ups ,later do them on hard floor, even gravel if you can toughen them up enough, this will toughen the knuckles. Work out the Forearms and wrist if you don't like weights ,but the stronger they are the harder you hit, Hook punches can generate more power ( lats /shoulder) do a lot of the work if you know how to really dig into a target. i'll post another one sometime next month,a better one where I can throw power combos from both southpaw and orthodox stance , have to replace these gloves the right hand is busted with little padding in it is now about 10 oz gloves down from 16 oz glove. Ultimatly the twist motion and core are going to enable you to give the power but you need everything else I said as foreman once stated..... " my power comes from my forearms" Throwing lazy or weaker punches then you are hurting your hand on poor technique, you shouldn't be hurting your hands if you aren't punching hard. Im reposting this vid vid descrption: Me in southpaw stance n 150 pound Muay Thai bag after 2 hrs of punching and only 3 beers in me ( not joking ,last minute video decision before I did this) Basically doing hard body shots bc left shoulder is hurt here. Im reposting this to show you driving body shots, the vid you posted didn't show driving through the bag, if you are working the bag go through the bag with the punches if you want to hit harder( maybe you do?) I went through two pairs of gloves in a month before my trainer gave me these: http://imgur.com/a/AlXLm They've actually held up really well. But they are also starting to come apart. http://imgur.com/a/blfnH Yeah, I honestly haven't been focusing enough on strength exercises. I've been focused on just boxing, and it takes all my time, like 5 hours. But I need to start incorporating more of that stuff since I feel like I've hit a plateau from just boxing in terms of my physical development. There was a time when I was getting really sore after the HB, but not really any more. Cool, I'll start doing those knuckle pushups. Do you have any other recommendations for forearm exercises that are good for boxing? Thanks!
Yeah, I've ruined my left from throwing left hooks on the bag. Can't throw them with power at all now. Maybe, if it's a certain punch that always hurts you, just throw it with almost no power but aim for perfect form (or just throw it 100% when shadow boxing). Also, ANY hand/arm problem you have that persists, get it seen to asap. I didn't, and I KNOW I've got some bad nerve damage from not doing so.
Might be time to get better gloves, I work with a dude who sells custom made equipment so feel free to msg if you are interested in that. Those look worn through. But anyway, if you go cheap then google KOFG as their gloves are great at the price. Spending 5 hours just boxing sounds super super excessive to me too for maybe anyone but a top class pro in camp
I'll keep that in mind. I also found it depends on the bag. Some make my wrists a bit sensitive to hooks. Like the banana bag. The 250lb Ringside bag I can hit all day just fine.
Cool I'll check those out. Yeah my coach tells me it's excessive too. I just think to all the stories of guys like Hagler putting in crazy work at the gym, and I feel like that's what's required. But maybe it's a bit much.
Those gloves dont look safe to me,i wouldnt use them TBH.....Look into Hayabusa gloves...they are $$$$$ but will give you a better punch and more accuracy. Those gloves you showed i actually laughed at when a pro HW at my gym showed me that he uses them ...this is a guy who relies on good work.....In my opinion you need to spend the monetyy on good quality to get results, those gloves are Shyte tbh. im very picky with gloves, they should couture to the feel of your hand. those gloves are top heavy and have less wrist support,it throws the punch off. i still had my pair up[ until last month ,but thats hard abuse for 3 years of hammering them . https://jet.com/product/detail/11a7...155683987740&gclid=CPS6t9-3idECFZCLswod7lAGpQ it doesnt take alot of time to strength excersise...2/3 days a week one hour. Five hrs is excessive all the time.
Hit a bag incorrectly and will injure yourself. Bags however don't have bones and bodies do. Hitting a person in the wrong way or in the wrong place and you will injure hand.
Too many variables to consider. They're BOTH something you can't really do without. I'm really curious about WHY you're asking. If you're concerned about injury, perhaps boxing is not for you??!! In 6 years competing, sparring and countless hours on a heavy bag, i've never injured a hand. Although it's always a possibility. Learning proper technique is important but it can't eliminate the possibility of injury.
