Here's a pretty good site on all the modern boxers that were nominated. http://www.bwaa.org/ibhof.htm
Thanks for the response, didn't realize he number was so high. Meaning as you mentioned, nice idea, but simply not practical.
I believe Jeff Clark should be on the ballot as well. I don't know if he would get enough votes to get elected, BUT I do believe he is better then a lot of others that are on the ballot.
Petey Sarron might not get in this year, but I'm pretty confident he'll eventually be inducted, due in large part to the connection with Armstrong and his terrific rivalry with Freddie Miller. Carnera brought the heavyweight championship out of mothballs and he defended it three times before he'd even held it a year, the only HW titlist to do that between 1921 and 1938. Primo may not have been a great fighter, but he was a good champion who put the title up against worthy contenders in legitimate competition. His wins over Sharkey and Loughran were on the level, and he deserves full credit for beating them. (Braddock later sat on the title for over two years, yet he got enshrined nearly a decade ago.)
Yes, it's true. But I doubt Carnera will get in the IBHOF. Historically, he's had a lot of garbage dumped on his reputation. Ed (Gunboat) Smith would be in my hall of fame too.
I always thought Dejesus was in but I checked and he isnt, well I think he should be also Little Red Lopez is way over due and hes more deserving than other guys that are already in. There has been a few threads on this already and its unanamous. On 2 polls 1 by me and 1 by Booradley and not one post said no.
Clark should be in for sure. IMO, the hall of fame needs to expand its voting base and globalize a bit more.
the hall needs to seriously stop with all the openings. eventually they'll be letting people like jess willard and ingemar johannson in.
:deal Yes i agree,I think when they let Mcguigan in they lowered in for a lot of other guys. If they lower it again there should be room for at least a 100 other guys.
Members of the Hall of Fame fall into five categories: Modern, Old-Timer, Pioneer, Non-Participant, and Observer, and are chosen by a vote of 150 boxing experts, historians, and writers. The voters hail from all parts of the globe. In order to be placed on the ballot, individuals must first clear a pre-screening committee of boxing historians. Modern fighters are additionally required to have been retired for five years. Non-participants can be elected to the Hall of Fame even if they are still active, assuming they have achieved enough in their careers to merit selection. The board of directors of the Hall of Fame determines how many people are to be inducted each year. The candidates who accrue the most votes are those who become inductees. Ballots are mailed out on November 1 each year with the announcement of the new class of inductees coming in mid-January. Herb Goldman, Bert Sugar and others have been pushing for me to be on the Committees for years, BUT this was the 1st year that I actually had an official vote. For years, I would get a phone call from several of the voters asking me who I would pick. I even talked to one a couple of weeks ago and I told him that I was now on both the Modern and Old-Timers Committee. He then told me that I should be on both BUT guys like him really shouldn't be on either one of them. He also said that he really doesn't know these fighters that well to have a vote and that is why he always asked me. I believe it is getting harder and harder to pick, because most of the boxers that should be in, are already in. The only other ones that aren't are the new candidates such as Tyson. Here's another site that has all the former Inductees: [ame]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Boxing_Hall_of_Fame[/ame]
Does it ever become mandatory for a fighter to be inducted if they meet certain criteria? For example we would assume that Bernard Hopkins will be inducted when he becomes eligible but would it be at the discretion of the comitte?
YES, it would be at the discretion of the Committee, just like any other Hall of Fame. I have been the President of the New Jersey Boxing Hall of Fame for 24 years and I ask for names each year. I then form a committee and we go over each candidate one at a time. The ones with the most votes get in.
