The judging for this fight was the easiest perhaps of 2008. Harold Lederman was obviously blind giving round 2 to Jones for landing 1-2 decent shots. The official judges all had it right at 118-109, matched my card exactly and should have matched anyone elses. Hard to believe people were predcting this fight for Jones. I said many times it would be either a 10-2 fight or a late TKO for Calzaghe. Im actually suprised JC didnt get the TKO. Jones showed quite a bit of resolve hanging in there. He didnt fight very hard imo and has been mentally a wreck since 2003 when he got KTFO, I dont even know if Jones is capable of fighting hard anymore. Even after the fight Jones said he had a moral victory for fighting to the end. Surviving a fight to lose horribly one sided isnt my idea of a moral victory. But, I'll admit it I have never been a RJJ fan. Jones even in round 1 when he semi buzzed JC didnt even follow up with an offensive barrage. He isnt capable of that anymore. He clearly needs to retire. I feel that JC let off the gas after about round 7. I dotn know if he was tiring or didnt want to TKO Jones. Enzo wanted the TKO for sure. :bbb I've seen worse fights, but this fight was terriblt one sides and overall a pretty bad card.
100% agreed with the bold parts of your post. Not with the underlined one, I was pretty sure Joe couldn't KO Jones and I stated it many times. Easy Calzaghe UD was my predicition, but as you said, this fight was very easy to predict.
Honestly, I thought Jones would give up in this fight given his past few performances or the ref would stop it through a flurry while Jones just stood there covered up, since he doesnt throw back much these days. So the TKo prediction was more based on a really weak Jones. I guess he gets more respect for standing in the being clowned all fight long. Id rather have seen him get stopped.
Yoy know what, I believe Jones' goal was to survive the fight, end his career with pride AND getting one last big payday. And I think he achieved all of that in this fight.
I respect what you have to say here and Jones seemed to be quite pleased with himself in the post fight interview. However, I thought Calzaghe was embaressing him so badly that I was hoping Jones would go down. I don't know, is surviving and being beaten and clowned all fight better than stopping the fight because you are outclassed?
Hmmm, it depends I guess. Lacy got schooled badly by Joe, but he got respect for finishing the fight on his feet. Imagine the bashing he would have got if he got knocked out in the 11th or 12th round.
The judges were spot on in scoring it 11-1 for Calzaghe........if not for the knockdown scored by Jones in the 1st round, it would have been a complete shutout. I thought Calzaghe was winning that first round handily, that I did'nt give Jones the benefit of a 10-8, I scored it 10-9 on my card and only because Calzaghe to me seemed to be legitamately hurt, otherwise I would have went the even route on my 1st round score. Jones was doing some talking to Calzaghe around round 8 or 9, while Calzaghe was beating him down......Calzaghe then proceeded to put the gears in cruise control.......I'm wondering if Jones asked Calzaghe during his chat, to lay off the gas, and let him cross the finish line! I'm just kidding, I dont believe such pact was made, but to me Calzaghe did lay off the accelerator and let Jones finish, when he could have pressed the pedal and tried for a stoppage. It was a complete Calzaghe's decision, and he chose to either have mercy on Jones, or not take any risks that would cause him to get hit with something lucky.
Those that were sane and analyzing this fight with their brain, knew that Jones only chance was to fight exactly the way he did......picking and chosing a couple of times during each round when to exert real energy in hopes of landing a big shot. You had to really been reaching and hoping beyond hope that Jones could somehow outbox Calzaghe during the long haul of the fight.
Personally, and this is just my opinion, but I would like to see more feedback on this question. Would you rather see your fighter taunted, jeered, disrespected and clowned on all fight long while getting beat up or see them stopped or have their corner stop them ahead of such embaressment? Guess it depends on whether you see finishing a fight on your feet as a moral victory. Certainly you take a lot more damage for finishing.
From what I understand, American boxing fans are very "sensitive" as far as "qutting" or getting knocked out is concerned. If you ask me, there's nothing wrong with a corner protecting their fighter, or a fighter choosing to quit if he thinks it's the best thing to do. But tonight's fight was a special case imo, Jones had been criticized a lot in the past about his chin and ability to come through adversity, so making it to the final bell meant a lot to him and his fans.
I thought the judges had it slighty wide. I had it close after the first four rounds or so but then Calzaghe dominated.
The first round KD surprised me, but apart from that it was indeed a wide UD12 for Calzaghe. RJJ just doesn't have enough left in the tank to compete at the same pace as Calzaghe. Their comparable resumes over the last 3 years are laughably uneven. That's what I thought going in, and that's still what I think now.
I don't score ineffective flurries or blocked shots, or unlanded activity. I had Roy well ahead after 5, I saw him land the clean, strong punches, he just doesn't have the stamina to keep it up. I was baffled by the scores and by the way people talk about it, Roy took no punishment through round 5, and I don't know what Zag was showboating about. Roy sat in the corner in a turtle shell, Calzaghe hit him with nothing meaningful, then taunted him. I don't understand why. The few shots that landed flush were Jones'. Jones also indisputably won round 12, simply b/c Joe didn't do anything. Roy landed many solid body shots. It depends on how you score. I don't score amateur or volume-based boxing, and I don't score ineffective aggression. I had Jones winning before the cut, and having enough points piled up to make the decision competitive, but clear for Joe. I also scored Hop over Calzaghe for the same reasons. If I see 5 slaps against a guarded opponent, followed by 1 crisp counter, I score the counter. That's how rds 1-5 went.
so what was the core on your card then i gave rjj the 1st and had a 10-10 rnd 2 but the rest to JC 118-110
