It looks like Haymon knows what he's doing or otherwise he wouldn't be doing it ,just enjoy the free boxing.
this didnt work with strikeforce on cbs. strikeforce bled money. the way they recoup the money is to mitigate the losses with ad revenue. then you can create a streaming channel (thomas hauser mentioned this) where people can pay for the ppvs (similar to wwe) and bypassing cable distributors (middle man). You can use free tv as a means to advertise the pay channel (cbs is doing this with their streaming service). Even if this doesn't work, they can always build the stars and try to make money back on showtime ppv. That is if showtime boxing is still around.
Don't know if/how it would apply here but NBCSports Channel does show replays of boxing cards. There's also a possibility of local sports channels replaying some of these fights. I don't think there would be a lot of money in replays but there might be something there, not sure though. And you're right NBC proper won't be replaying the cards.
No. This is a time buy situation. Unless haymon is paying for replays or something else is done that we dont know about (probalby spiketv), no replays my friend. I see the logic in what haymon is doing. I think what he is doing can work few years down the road, but he might lose a ****ton of money now and be out of business quick.
Yeah, this won't be profitable at all in the start.. I'm sure he hopes by the end of this run NBC is PAYING him. He's trying to make a UFC style camp of fighters. In the UFC a loss of a named fighter isn't the end of them being a main-event fighter.. not at all.. guys can lose multiple times and fans still want to see them again. So you make a guy have a name, and then you can still use him over and over win or lose for awhile. This is also a big **** you to HBO and Showtime.. and ESPN. The fact he's paying NBC is pretty crazy.. but it shows he is playing a long game.
