Only an elite world class profesional fighter could hope to achiev anything against a heavyweight of the calibre of Marciano. Putting a man with six profesional fights in with him would be tantamount to cold blooded murder however big and strong he was.
How about a lampost v Marciano. The lampost is bigger and heavier plus they rarely get knocked over. Also the are used to heavy collisions with cars sometimes so I reckon the lampost can take Marciano.
.... "Marcianno"....? ...Magoo a bleeping idiot "that" "doesnt" know bleep about boxing...? rodnney, it's time to say bye-bye.
Spelling errors aside it really is a bull**** thread. It's laughable that in another thread so many people reckoned David Tua would knock Rocky out but now someone reckons a six fight novelty act beats Marciano. Pretty insulting in my opinion.
Let me clearify something for a moment. I never said that Jones would beat Marciano. I said that a man of his size and athleticism might give him some trouble. I did however joke a little about Rocky being too small for too tall. And frankly, I don't feel very daft for thinking that his giving Marciano some rounds might be the case. Jones would have been 11 inches taller, 70 Lbs heavier, and was a very strong, tough and athletic individual. He may not have had much boxing talent, but he was well capable of putting on boxing gloves and throwing a punch. To tell you the truth, it almost seems more foolish to me, for someone to think that Rocky would just go out there, brush up against the guy, and leave him a bloody mess before the first bell, then it does for Jones to give him at least 7 or 8 rounds of hard work.... At anyrate, I figured this thread would get people in an uproar, and unfortunately I was right...
Sorry to misquote you. But do you really think just because Jones was big he'd be able to give Rocky some rounds? Size without boxing ability means nothing. Look at Mark Gastineau. He was a big, strong athletic man but he was hamstrung by the fact that he couldn't fight a lick.Whilst he may have been able to take it and dish it out on the football field it didn't translate to the boxing ring.He got schooled by a much smaller journeyman as he didn't have the stamina, technique or ability to succeed against even a moderately skilled fighter. And your asking Jones to match it with an all-time great fighter and puncher. Seriously I doubt that Jones would even be able to land a punch cleanly on Rocky fighting out of his crouch and he certinly wouldn't be able to stop him from getting inside and torturing his body with those pile driver punches of his.Remember the old saying "kill the body and the head will fall" which I think would happen here in 1-2 rounds max.
Jones never progressed past the clubfighter level in his career. Literally the "best" opponent he fought was an 18-12-1 guy who had won only two of his last eight fights. There's no particularly strong reason to think he was a better fighter than guys like Big Bill Wilson or Jerry Jackson, both of whom Marciano destroyed in the first round. Why would people think Marciano would wipe Jones out early? Because Marciano would wipe most obscure-clubfighter-level guys out early. If I were to find some random obscure clubfighter who had a half-dozen pro fights in his entire career and never faced anyone in the top 200 in the world, even if he was big, I highly doubt you or anyone else would take seriously the idea that he could compete with Marciano or any other great world heavyweight champion; it seems you're taking this seriously because Jones is famous as a football player.
It seems there are two different arguments being made here .... The first is that Too Tall could compete with Marciano which is a joke in my opinion. The second is that a world class, professional fighter with tremendous size advantages could defeat Marciano based on skill plus and that answer is sure. I think Ali, Holmes and Lewis fit that bill ... again, that is simply my opinion. Back to Ed, no way.
Honestly a decent MW contender would beat Jones. He was never any good. Loads of these kind of guys from other sports come out of the woodwork thinking all they need is a bit of fitness and the basics. they always get pasted. watch a football amtch or NFl or rugby when a mass brawl breaks out. None of them can ever fight.
Yeah on second thought, I don't think Jones would have lasted long against anyone who remotely had any semblence to a world beater. A journeyman named Mike White who was 6'10", and never went anywhere would have likely beaten Ed Jones. I suppose size only matters if the individual who posses it has the coordination and boxing skill to compliment it.
Anyone can obviously post what they want. Reply or don't. In this case, Marciano wins easily within the first minute. Any fight can be interesting. This is what I think would be the outcome.
