Just watched the fight and 36 yrs later I still think Davis won 8-4.
If Eddie got the decision he deserved, thrn Mike never fights Holmes and Larry retires undefeated.

I watched this recently and had it closer but agree that Davis should have got the decision.

I too had Davis winning, closely.

I thought it was a toss-up. A bunch of very close rounds.

I haven't watched in a while but I remember two of the cards were down right awful. It was a close fight but I remember having Spinks up. Eddie was the more active guy but Spinks landed the harder more meaningful shots in my opinion. If I remember correctly, two of the judges had it a blow out for Spinks which it certainly was not.

Spinks clearly underestimated Eddie and Davis put in a very good performance, probably (I only remember Lalonde post Spinks) his best, but Spinks still did enough, albeit, as mentioned not by the near shutouts Cortez and Hazzard had it. Both showed themselves much better refs!

I thought Davis won going away. Spinks just could not land on the guy. And he kept getting hit and he is a different fighter when he's getting hit.

I would agree they were both quite good in a very very tough era. Hard to get anywhere at the top end when the line up was Eddie Mustafa Muhammad, Saad Muhammad and Michael Spinks.
