Two Talented Middleweights who could Box and Punch, but who also seemed to share something of a cautious streak, Maybe they just wanted to see the whites of the eyes, but it did seem that they may of prospered more on occasion with a bit more of a devilish approach to their work, Viciousness with the Versatility and venom so to speak, but that cautious streak did seem to shackle them on occasion Eddie came out on the short end against Bald Headed Marauder Bad Bennie Briscoe, Then subsequently went up to greater renown at Lt Heavy, but must of got a Dose of Bald Headed Marauder Deja'Vue Against Superman Scott, in Rahway. Frank of course was turned inside out by Michael Nunn, and Unlike Eddie could not relocate successfully to Lt Heavy, Virgil Hill proving a bad Style match-up for Frank But at Middleweight, this could have provided a battle of Hits as well as Wits, I can see Eddie Stalking Forwards in a relaxed manner looking to maneuver Frank onto the left hook, i can also see Frank happy to retain distance and looking to catch Eddie coming in with his Long right cross, Both using their excellent Jabs to try and Unlock the other, ...So who comes out of Cruise control to win this .... Steady Eddie or Tranq Frank ??
I don't hold those losses against Eddie,..because he came into his own as a lightheavy...masterfully owning Marvin Johnson and then pulverizing Jerry Martin, who beat James Scott w/two kds, if you'll remember.
If they fought at middleweight, I'd give Tate a shot. Eddie didn't really like fighters who could move and box. Tate was mediocre at Light Heavyweight and Gregory peaked there, so at LH Eddie would win an easy decision or late ko
As a callow youth at the time, I thought it was a thing of beauty...efficient, effective, masterful....like Eddie was channelling Jack Johnson or something. No hurry at all to this whipping...he was methodical and as you said, "punch perfect".
