I know he is regarded as one of the best trainers ever. I was wondering what are his best achievements/best line of work. OR any important info about him. I know he worked with Norton and Frazier to help them defeat Ali. And that he worked with Roach and numerous others and helped teach them alot. Also i watched Tapia-Romero during the week and was interested to see that he was in Tapia's corner. So if you have any stories or info regarding thsi great it would be appreciated. Thanks
He masterminded the perfecto gameplan of Spinks vs Qawi. Shockingly, he put Spinks fabled and most effective punch, the Spinks Jinx mostly in the closet. This worked a treat as Qawi was incredible at rolling with the right hand and countering with his own. This was just one point. He also had specific directional plans and much more. Made for a flat fight, but won the night for Spinks along the path of least resistence.
Ok thanks, so basically he was great at breaking down opponents styles and coming up with great gameplans? Wasnt he an amateur fighter? Was he pretty good? Any other great examples, and some proteges who followed him? thanks
IMO mate he is probably the greatest strategist in history. Certainly in my time and as far back as i have looked. He picked up on nuances better than anybody and found plans to combat them.
He also had Montell Griffen completely confusing Roy Jones for a few rounds, and of course Riddick Bowe.
Futch was the man with the master plan & his achievements in Boxing need no explaination! However, one of the most moving moments has to be when he pulled out Frazier in the Thrillia in Manilla! Doing such a thing had compassion, love, consdieration & concern written all over it! It must have been hard for Eddie to do such a thing because he more than anyone, would have known how much Frazier wanted to defeat Ali!
