I've heard on here that very few fighters showed up for Futch's funeral. Does anyone know who DID show up for it?
I had just left town and could not make the funeral, a week before i had spoken to Eddie and Eva, he looked tired but was very jovial.. I regretfully couldn't return from the Uk so quick and i apologised but was horrified to hear of the very few fighters that should have shown thier respects.. I think Riddick Bowe , Wayne Mccullough , J'Marie Moore (Archies daughter) , Doc Broadus, Thell Torrence and Hedgemon Lewis were there.. I don't think Mike Spinks , or Kenny Norton went nor Montel Griffin.. I don't even think Joe or Marvis attended .. Larry Holmes was there but just showed his face... I honestly can't be sure exactly but i can find out.. Its been a while but i remember being told about it by Kenny Adams and we were disgusted at how few actually paid thier respects...
I've heard from a reliable source several of this boards members will be at yours with steaming dumps ready to go.
In all honesty though, funerals don't usually come at good times for anyone. We don't know what some of those fighters had going on at the time, nor their reasons for not making it. I'm sure it wasn't out of shear laziness.
That is verry true. My grandma died last year and we knew it was coming verry soon around the time of her birthday. My other grandma had to choose for practical reasons between atending the birthday party or atending the funeral. She decided that atending the birthday party would benefit her more. So you have to look at the circumstances.
Actually i agree that some may have been unable to attend due to unforseen circumstances, but Eva was hoping all of the fighters Eddie was close to attend , he had very few relatives left.. Boxing was his family.. The funeral was massive and the ballroom at caesars palace where mass was read was bursting, It was the names i mentioned that didn't show.. It was quite a sore point for a few at the time, J'Marie was very close to her 'Auntie Eva' and told me she was sad that some didn't even write her..
I know this is kind of an old thread, but Joe Frazier was also at the funeral. I spoke to him briefly afterwards. He used to come out to Gramps' house in La Puente and play with us kids. Peace and aloha, Bing Futch Eddie's grandson BingFutch.com
