This is the co-main event on the GBP on ESPN2 card tomorrow night, and IMO should almost certainly outshine the main event (a showcase for unbeaten super featherweight prospect Ryan "Kingry" Garcia). Don't get me wrong; Fernando Vargas Parra is a very tough & capable journeyman who should give Kingry a decent night's work and isn't going to roll over, and is a marginal step up in class for him. Gómez and Gibson, however, are both in a position where a loss could send them into a tailspin away from relevance while for either man, beating the other could be a gateway back onto the contention fast track. Very evenly matched and should be a good mesh of styles.
Form suggests they're operating at the same level, so this will be down to styles & execution tonight. (both have most recently fought Alejandro Barrera, with Gómez losing a MD in July and Gibson winning a SD in October) Eddie Gómez vs. Alejandro Barrera: This content is protected KeAndre Gibson vs. Alejandro Barrera: This content is protected Gibson used to be the Golden Boy in-house "secret weapon" for anybody that fought Mayweather, as he would ape him in sparring (reportedly well - similar to a Karl Dargan), tapped by Pacquiao & Canelo in both their losing efforts. Whereas the promotional company snapped up Gibson in late 2013, however, already halfway into their pro careers (both he & Gómez debuted in 2010), "E-Boy" has spent his entire 23-fight journey under their banner. Every time he gets some momentum built up with a really good win, he runs into a wall and suffers another setback loss (edged by Chia Santana after snatching the zero from then Money Team prospect Daquan Arnett; then blitzed in 1 minute by Rashidi Ellis directly on the heels of another win against John Karl Sosa; then most recently having the decision tip against him vs. Barrera just three months after rebounding with a UD over 14-1 Dennis "The Spartan" Dauti. Small world: Gibson also took an 8-round unanimous decision over Dauti just a couple of months after Gómez did...)
Yeah, always been a fan myself, was really high on him when he beat Arnett, then have just been smh over and over at the constant hiccups in momentum since. Getting a W over Gibson puts him on the right track.
