We was on a good wave around 2006, 2007 with Calzaghe, Hatton and a couple of others. But what we have now is absolutely insane. I'd say boxing is a top 3 sport in the UK now.
Boxing's profile may be up, but the product hasn't been all that great. Sky serves up slop on the regular, with most good stuff (and even ho-hum stuff, like Bellew-Clev II) going to Box Office and often backed with crap undercards. Not to mention the ineffably gullible British public being conned into paying for needless, manufactured farces like Bellew-Haye.
He’s got Joshua who’s by far Britain’s biggest boxing star but who else does Hearn have that comes close to be a major sports star in Britain?
**** just saving British boxing, he’s played a huge role in the revitalization of boxing as a whole over the past few years. He’s the only promoter who is constantly getting all of his fighters’ exposure nonstop. I can’t remember the last time I wasn’t able to watch 90% of the fights on a Matchroom card. It might not always be the prettiest product, as earlier posts stated, but without it, there wouldn’t be anything to watch so what’s the point in complaining lol. I also respect what he does for his fighters. He overhyped Okolie to the point that he headlined a ****ing TV event when he clearly wasn’t ready yet (and I like Lawrence quite a bit so I’m not biased). I appreciate Eddie’s efforts when you compare it to the promoters here in America. The only company coming close right now over here is Golden Boy.
He's a personality. He's entertainment. He's ****ing hilarious and he loves boxing. He's just what boxing needs just as the HW scene is coming back to life after over a decade of being dormant. Cometh the hour cometh the man! Every memorable boxing era needs a charismatic promoter that people either love to hate or find entertaining. Love em or hate em, promoters with personality are part and parcel of a successful time and era of boxing. Butch Lewis, Don King, Rock Newman.....look what we've had for the last 10 years. Arum, DiBella, Oscar, Frank, Schafer, Hayman, not the most charismatic and memorable bunch. I think he's brilliant for the sport and I reckon the casual american fans will love him and remember him, I think Matchroom's gonna do well in their expansion into the States.
He's good at his job but he's also been fortunate. There has been a general boom in sports in general in the UK since the 2012 London games, the British appetite for attending sports events has probably never been higher. That along with the steady stream of word class British talent due to the heavy investment at the amateur level since the 2000 Olympics has helped.
