Eddie Hearns doubles down: "Tyson Fury is not entertaining in the ring. But AJ is ****ing epic!"

Matchroom and Sky's target audience aren't necessarily people on a board like this. It's people who are primarily fans of another sport (Football for example) who watch Boxing as a second sport.

People who aren't as fanatical about a sport are less likely to be interested in the intricacies and subtleties of it, they want to see action and the end result.

If you're using that as a measurement and when considering that audience - AJ is the more entertaining fighter.

Fury is clearly the more skilled, but you're far less likely to see huge knockouts and raw aggression in his fights which probably explains Hearn's comments.

I think even Fury knows this hence why Warren, John Fury and Davison commented on how Fury was more aggressive last week to try and get the KO. A shutout on points wouldn't cut it.

You cant say apart from the KD rounds in wilder what else happened and then say Joshua Klitschko was an epic entertaining fight start to fight.

Yep agreed. I found both fights highly entertaining, but I think to a more casual boxing audience - Joshua/Klitschko was the more exciting fight. That's Matchroom's market so that's the lens they're going to view it through.

 

It's a weird mindset

He's 10x better than the bodybuilder but 1/10 as popular that's the reality of it, more ppv mugs she'll out for the bodybuilder. Who cares?

The mind of the fanboy us a weird one, and just like the AJ ones couldn't process that he want all that skill wise, the Fury ones can't process that he ain't that popular.

 

Absolute nonsense his fights against Chisora and Hamer we're masterclasses and the Cunningham fight was FOTY contender. The Pakjic fight was entertaining even Joey Abell had a go before getting stopped. Then you have Rogan, Madolone and the number he did on a younger Kevin Johnson just look at Gorman and Dubous efforts in comparison.

 

He was right a few fights ago (in some people’s eyes anyway) but Eddie is out of date, Fury’s fight with wilder was arguably as exciting as any of AJ’s fights and he whacked the last no hoper out in quick fashion.

 

Fury was in some entertaining fights in the channel 5 days, mainly because he was sloppy and vulnerable.

Don’t think he should be judged on the Wlad fight. The big fights are often anticlimactic as it’s just about getting the W. AJ vs Parker for example.

 

Being entertaining in the ring is only one part of a fighter's marketability. While everything else being equal, exciting fighters make more money than boring ones, there isn't always a direct correlation. The highest paid fighter of all time has a defensive mindset, is rarely in exciting fights, and scores few knockouts. Carl Thompson was the most consistently exciting British fighter of his generation, but was not a money fighter at any point in his career.

Fury has not been a big draw to date. This doesn't have to be a fixed position though. His exciting and controversial fight with Wilder, his recovery from addiction and mental health issues, and his recent charm offensive are all things that could tip him into crossover territory on both sides of the pond. For all we know, it may already have happened and translate into big numbers for the Wilder rematch.

 

I think people overstate how dumb some fans are. Before the Schwartz fight everyone was saying he was a hopeless opponent who would get blasted out. That happened. People suddenly didn't think Tyson was hugely entertaining.

And don't forget, not that many people watched it.

 

Fury is more entertaining outside of the ring. And vice versa with AJ.

Best material for falling asleep is listening to an AJ interview or watching Fury fight in the ring.

He has been on TV and Radio right across America. He is fast becoming a household name in America much the same as Joshua did in the UK.

 

That 2.6m is based on YouTube views yeah? Well, Louis Theroux has 3.1m views on Joe Rogan. Brian Cox got 3.5m. I'm not sure an obscure British documentary film maker and an obscure former keyboardist turned astrophysicist are 'household names' in America. I think the reason for those figures is because Joe Rogan himself is popular and has an audience himself.

Anyway, all you are doing is a rehash of what happened after Wilder. 'Him getting up like the Undertaker has been watched by millions and millions on social media. His Joe Rogan podcast has 2.2 million views and counting. He has been on TV and Radio right across America.'

Net result: sold dismally against Schwartz.
