I love Machen. I think he's great. I think his comeback from mental illness and financial ruin to get back into the ring and duke it out with the world class Patterson and give him a stern test is one of the ring's great uncelebrated comebacks. So seeing this is a real treat for me. His duel with Liston is one of my favourite fights, not that it's really exciting or anything but I just love both of those guys. This was a real treat for me to see Q. Thanks.
Eddie Machen is one of the better classical boxers of all time. Outstanding fundamentals, excellent defense,..but what many people don't realize is that he could punch too! Ezzard Charles in 1955 picked Machen to be the next great heavyweight champion. Machen beat a long list of top 10 contenders. Eddie would be highly rated in any era.
Thanks for uploading this. A very impressive performance by Machen. I can easily understand why many observers felt he was the real heavyweight champion in 1957 and 1958. I wonder if Floyd could have handled a young Machen.
Mcgrain, With all due respect for Machen-Patterson...floyd beat the **** out of him. I think Floyd knocked him down 4 or 5 times..and won 11 out of the 12 rounds. Props to Machens courage for finishing the fight.
I saw it. What impressed me was the way he went to the body after stunning Valdes with a one-two to the head.
Of course, and I think a less cautios Floyd would have got him out of there, but I didn't really mean that. I meant - imagine crumbling mentally, all the way and still having the sack to get in with a world class HW, also a puncher, and extend him the full twelve? That's a comeback. I think Patterson always beats Machen, but I love Machen's toughness and recovery to full mental fitness. The guy was broken. I have the Ring magazine that reports on this fight, I will dig it out tomorrow and open a thread with the details and scan some pics if there are good ones. I don't think there is one, though it would be a great read if there were. I've just picked the threads of the story up reading different bits and bobs over the years. Machen's was a truly storied career. And he could box and he could hit. An underated fighter. It's a big, big shout, but I think he might have qualified for great status in a modern cruiserweight division, in that I think he could have been a great cruiserweight.
another example of how the modern sized heavyweights did not pan out at a time when shorter heavyweights kept their weight down. It is a short clip but even so machen looks razor sharp here, pin point. nino is game and strong but overcome by the speed and angles presented to him by machen.
I admire the hell out of Eddie Machen...I cringe when I see the Johansson destruction, but never fail to be impressed even with a losing performance in his fight with Liston. Eddie was ahard luck kid who didn't gtet the big breaks. When it was raining soup he'd be standing out there with a knife and a fork..if he got half a girl, he'd get the half that eats...if he...ah, you get the picture..the guy had no luck..still that Valdez ko looked great..what potential the moody Mr. Machen had..and I think he was better than Zora Folley..despite going 0-1-1 with him, and would have at his very best, given Muhammad Ali an interesting evening and would have at least survived to the final bell.
I've yet to see a film of Valdes where he's looking good. Maybe the Charles fight or the 2nd Moore fight are out there ? He had a big reputation here in the UK. In the gyms and in the ring. He doesn't look too hot on film though. Or the ones I've seen here lately anyway.
I don't know about that. Let us wait until we see Folley's best stuff on film before we judge. Both were terrific fighters in an underrated era.
