The Reason he is hyped up in the UK is because he dominated some of European's better heavyweights in the 50s like Heinz Neuhas, Joe Erskine, Don Cockell, Brian London, Dick Richardson, Karel Sys. In fact, he knocked all of those men out.
This films of Valdes and the British reaction have clarified something that puzzled me--why the British were so hung up on Valdes and pushed the Al Weill was scared of Valdes bit so hard. I think the evidence points to Weill being wary of Moore, which makes far more sense.
nino did not knock out brian london! I have the fight and london climbed all over valdes pushing him around. Nino was actualy overwhelmd at times, though he was by far the beter man and stronger. London got cut and it was only stopped on the cut. London was furious and said patterson was much much beter than valdes in the interview afterwards.
From watching this video of Valdes getting pounded by Machen can you just imagine what Marciano would have done to him. Valdes is so lucky that Marciano "AVOIDED" him. Eddie Machen was a very talented fighter and what a shame he had mental problems that hurt his career. It's sad to think of Machen, Folley and Sonny Liston with how all three came to such tragic endings within just a year or so. It's too bad that none of them got their much deserved title opportunities back in the late 1950's when they were at their very best.
I met Eddis in 1963 or 64, on the street in Berkeley, CA. I had seen his fight with Cleveland Williams in Hoiuston in 1962. Two highly talented heavyweights; compared to that fight Patterson and Johansson looked like two bums staggering around in an alley.Eddie seemed like a nice guy. He said "Come on up to the house some time and meet the old lady." Anybody got any Henry Hank? Most exciting fighter to watch from the 60's. None of his spectacular kayos seem to be available on the internet. Matsyodara
The Patterson-Machen fight from boxrec. Scartissue Weights: Machen 198½; Patterson 192½ Promoter: Edwin Ahlquist "Floyd Patterson decisively outpointed Eddie Machen in their 12 round bout here last night before 40,000 at the Raasunda outdoor stadium. Except for the 7th round, which Machen won with a stinging right to the jaw, Patterson dominated the fight with his familiar peekaboo guard and lightning fast series of kangaroo rushes. Machen was down in the 10th and 11th from slips for no counts. Blood stains showed on his white trunks and he nursed a closed left eye at the end. Machen confused Patterson at times by keeping his head low at close quarters, but only his defensive skill - and maybe Floyd's lack of a takeout punch - kept him on his feet for the distance. Teddy Waltham, the British referee and sole arbiter, raised Patterson's hand as soon as the final gong sounded. He gave Patterson nine rounds, Machen one round and called two even, the same as the AP scorecard. In points, Waltham scored it, 59-49." -Associated Press Retrieved from "http://boxrec.com/media/index.php/Floyd_Patterson_vs._Eddie_Machen"
