I dont know about the state of Machen at that time exactly, so this is basically a question of him surviving Sonny Liston. Of course its only 1 fight. the same happened with Tillis (Tyson), who got crushed by Bruno, Holyfield and Mason.
Machen is not big man with reach like Lewis and Ike to keep Tua power and even then they were caught!Liston was not KO artist with one punch like Ingo which Tua was!Tua left was equal to Ingo right hand! Machen is not the big guy!He could outbox him but...Tua would not wrestle with him like Liston!About Ingo he is stronger puncher than Liston and Machen and Patterson said that!Tua chin is better than both and he punched harder than Ingo! There is a small chance that Machen could outbox him but I would still favour Tua by KO!
Surviving Liston is not big deal!He was not power puncher but boxer puncher with big reach! Many guys lasted long with him but they would be knocked inside of 5 by Marciano,Foreman,Tua...Liston was not that good boxer and he was slow so great boxer like Machen could last a distance! But Ezz was better than Machen and Marciano knocked him!Liston was dangerous for someone but not for all them! Like Machen said:I would rather fight Liston than Ingemar or Cleveland Williams!
So do you see David Tua doing better (koing more fighters) against Listons opponents too? I think Liston is overrated too, but a good defensive moving fighter could take Tua the distance.
I agree with that but good moving fighter with reach and power! Liston is overatted but I somehow still liked him!
This was five years after Moorer lost the title, and he had long since dropped out of the top ten. I wouldn't bet a second had spit bucket on Tua beating any prime highly ranked contender!
Of course you wouldn't! You also believe he would lose to Corbett - so when it comes to Tua, how can you expect anyone to take you seriously?
I watched Liston v Machen today. Machen pretty much went into his shell but I noticed the left hook and he uses left hook leads frequently. This stylistic nightmare against a left hooker like Tua. Especially with the weight and power disparity. Then again we're comparing the steroid era versus an era where these drugs were less common
