To me it appeared a very competitive affair, round 15, everyone was cheering for Machen, imagine if he had won the title, then he would have met Ali on Feb 6 1967 instead of Ernie fighting Ali.

While I'm sure Machen would have lost, I think Machen would have proved far more challenging to Ali than Terrell or anyone else back then did. Machen was perhaps the most innovative and well-rounded fighter of his times. He was such a brilliant fighter. It's interesting to me that you don't detest the contest since most people find it super boring, even Red Cobra, who loves Machen!

I have to admit, even I found it dull at times, but still thought it an intriguing contest that was fairly decent overall. I didn't think either one looked bad, I just could have done without all the whirling and 5 or 6 knockdowns produced by shoves.

No because I recognize talent, Eddie was talented but he was not against Patterson on July 5 1964.

With the possible exception of his Ingemar Johansson fight.
By the way, William, you do realize that Chuvalo LOST to Ali both times they fought, right? ;)

Surely the one round battering by Ingo was the worst, it's amazing that he came back from that.

Ya, I forgot about Ingo. Patterson would be his second worst. He lost to Folley and Johnson but those were close affairs. The fights with Liston (imo) and Ramos were pretty close too. I would not say Terrell and Frazier were his worst nights since he was getting up there, but still managed to put up a lot of resistance. I mean, Frazier was green, but Machen took a horrific beating for 10 rounds that Doug Jones, Chuvalo, Ramos, and even Quarry and Ellis couldn't take.

Yes, I agree, Eddie took a horrific beating from Frazier. I watched that one again recently. Joe caught him clean all through the 10 rounds with the vaunted left hook. This was a Machen at the end of the road, which highlights the power of Johansson, stopping a prime Machen inside a round.

I would have to agree that Johansson was the worse night since the Machen of Frazier was aging, plus he did hold his own for a while and almost floored Frazier. He did not have any kind of success vs. Johansson.
