Yeah, Eddie's main weakness other than the aforementioned mental ones, was lack of foot speed. He never moved and boxed himself. He plodded after Snipes who moved around him. In the Franklin fight, Franklin moved and boxed. I am not sure the Scott loss was an anomaly. Eddie didn't move much ever, and never had a high work rate. Scott was the stronger of the two physically. He outmuscled and outworked Eddie.
Can't read all the posts but, IMO, Eddie was a better fighter than Spinks, except for his head issues. Outside of his 'head' issues?...what a specimen! Left hook (up and down), numbing right, iron jaw. The late John Garfield, who posted here, mentioned his seeing a teenage Eddie winning the GG Welter NY crown saying, "I thought he was on his way to TRUE greatness"! Being from Indy, I was rooting for Marvin and he got his arse handed to him.
Great performance by Eddie. So much potential. And, he had to earn that vs Johnson. As a side note, I had the pleasure of hanging out with Marvin and his cousin at the IBHOF weekend in June. As nice a guy as you could ever meet. Still looked pretty fit as well.
I didn't ask him that exact question. But, earlier in the day at an open Q&A with Michael Moorer, seveeal fans proposed that Moorer may have been the greatest LHW of all time. When I brought this up to Marvin and his cousin (who was also fighter) they laughed out loud. They said, "Michael Moorer?, who did he ever fight at Light Heavyweight? In our era, you had to FIGHt EVERYBODY. With lots of different styles. And, everybody COULD FIGHT. " And, I promise you, his attitude was not bitter. He and his cousin more took it as a joke as if only a person with poor knowledge would ever posit such an opinion. They then expounded lots of anecdotes about great fighters like Matthew Saad Mohammed, Victor Galindez, Spinks. it was an honor to hear a legend talk about what I feel was the golden age of the LHW division.
