Anybody think that Panama Al has a case to be ranked above him at bantam? Or that he stands a significant chance of beating him h2h?
I tend to slightly favour Jofre over Olivares, Zarate and Ortiz h2h as well as in the overall context of the division's history. Brown is interesting though, especially h2h: I don't see Jofre stopping him, but can he successfully negotiate the difference in height and reach? He potentially had the style to do it IMO even with the disadvantage he would've been at. Or is it too big a task?

I have trouble deciphering Brown. He didn't lose much (in comparison to the fights he had, anyway), but given that many of the losses he did have came almost every time he faced a top notch fighter, it's hard for me to rank him among the top few Bantamweights of all time. Although I suppose the fact that a lot of those took place at a higher weight has to be considered. He has a very good record, regardless.

That seems to be the case with most of the top bantamweights.

I edited my post a bit. Wasn't really worded right. You may have a point, but for varying reasons I still wouldn't rank him up there with Jofre or Olivares, for instance.

Jofre was a national hero in Brazil...but unfortunately today he is not so popular anymore....the young fans don't know him anymore.....

But in my mind he´s a top 10 p4p greatest, very intelligent, could change his style anytime, a GREAT fighter....

Seki was definitly a quality operater. I will have to watch some of my Kingpetch fights again and post in that thread.

Also Medal definitly is two HUGE wins for Jofre, the guy was the dangerman of the whole Bantamweight division during that era, beating guys like McGowan, Harada, Seki etc... Although he does not look too impressive on film, he was a good fighter with a murderous punch.

Definitely, I believe the poster Mannasa is a very big proponent of Brown.

H2H Brown probably has the tools to defeat every top Bantamweight you can think of, but that could be said about any of the top, say, five Bantamweights but I think Brown is the most skilled of the lot, if not ultimately the best.

I can see Brown out-manuevering Jofre with his fast feet and snappy long range shots, to outbox Jofre for the 15 rounds duration. When Jofre did time him and land his own artillary, Brown was strong enough to take it and carried enough of an arsenal to fight back on even terms.

He was dominant over a very good era, and arguably on film is the most impressive.

Johnny Caldwell was mentioned in this thread as an opponent of Jofre. Here's some additional footage of him:

Johnny was an excellent fighter and a nice bloke from I can surmise. I started a remembrance thread on him when he passed away last year, though it got depressingly few responses. The fact was Jofre was able to dismantle him in such conclusive style scores him considerable brownie points IMO. It was Johnny's fight with the late, great Mr Alan Rudkin that initially peaked my interest in him aside from his valiant losing effort to Jofre. I think it might have been Al Jr who uploaded it onto youtube after I had a chat with him about Caldwell and Rinty Monaghan, another very underappreciated little man of yesteryear.

Caldwell is a quality operator. Really classy boxer at his best. Jofre has a big win over him IMO.

Caldwell was the scourge of the Scottish talent in the 50's and 60's as he was based in the Central Belt of Scotland and really established himself as a class above British level.
