I would have gave Lopez a mention but I don't personally rank him very highly at all.

Anarci has him in the top 30, though.

Well yeah, definitely his finest moment imo, the first one that is. Just because the fight was so good, 'epic' doesn't even begin to do justice to that one. I've been watching some Pryor lately, i'm ashamed i'd forgotten how good he was.

Lopez is like Pryor, ranking them really high is criminal, but let's have it right, he was an amazing fighter. Pryor>Lopez imo though.

Arguello vs Pryor I is the finest fight of the 1980s in my opinion, and that's high praise indeed.

Yeah, it ranks in the highest tier of 'the greatest fights of all time' for me as well.

Hate to bring it up, but Whitaker is typically at top 15-20 and his resume isn't sparkling, at least not at the top end.

I get you. You know what would be interesting/funny to do? Compile 2 lists, one strictly based on resume, and one on who we feel are the best fighters ever, no criteria, just make your own strongly opinionated list (regarding the latter)

Indeed. I'd like to see one of the more well rounded posters give it a shot.

Whitaker's CV is weird in a way. I've long felt that his staunchest supporters overblow it at times, especially the value of the Nelson win and the egregiousness of the Chavez draw (not to diminish either, mind). That said, the number of wins against top opposition and the way he often won them - even past his prime - are quite impressive to say the least. In the modern day where a fighter's CV is usually his main stumbling block, Whitaker's winlist and the number of fights he achieved it in against credible foes stands out. He wasn't fairly beaten IMO until the Trinidad fight which itself removed all doubt over the only vaguely questionable facet of his greatness: guts and durability.

De La Hoya ( Whitaker won imo)
Chavez (he deserved the nod clearly but it wasn't a robbery)
    Nelson
    Haugen
    Ramirez (twice)
    McGirt x2
    Pineda
    Vasquez
    Nazario
    Rodriguez
    Rivera
    Pendleton
    Paez
    Hurtado

That's quite a list if not exactly Langfordesque in depth, and you can draw clear parallels between Whitaker and Jofre in any doubt of their level of comp being offset by consistency and dominance.

Yeah, I don't credit Whitaker with a victory over De La Hoya. Good post, though.

    Easily.

Probably the most over-rated fight in history as far as excitement and clean action is concerned. Pryor/Arguello I by devastating knockout.

Yeah, it probably gets lauded because it's every-bodies favorite in his biggest triumph but it couldn't hope to produce the level of clean action of an Alexis/Pryor I. Let's have it right. Most likely wouldn't make my top 20 fights of all time list.
