Eder Jofre: Biggest disparity between resume and ATG standing?

Disagree with that, I feel he was in some great technical battles with the likes of Mcgirt, De La Hoya and put on some great clinics against Haugen and Ramirez. But I just don't enjoy watching the Nelson and Chavez fights, I can appreciate the skill level, just not the constant movement, niggly fouls and the general lack of drama.

I can certainly think of many i'd rather watch.

 

You forgot to mention Bolanos and Marino. Otherwise a solid post.

 

True. Bolanos is one of his more recognizable wins. He was a featherweight at the time and later grew into a solid 135 lber. Ortiz stopped him in 6 rounds.

All in all a very solid record, which in my opinion matches the record of any other bantamweight champion. Jofre, Zarate, Olivares and Brown too are more known for their dominant reigns than their outstanding opposition.

 

Perhaps I should rephrase: I thought that Whitaker won clearly enough (about 7-4-1 or 8-4ish though I rarely score fights round by round) but there are times when you'd think that Whitaker won every minute of every round according to some.

 

How are you defining resume? I hope it's not that ill-considered "ATGs that he beat" measure. Even if it is, Whitaker has plenty of ATG scalps and other very good fighters that he beat, he was even fairly competitive with a bigger ATG like De La Hoya when he was an old shot cokehead.

 

Again his longevity and relative dominance make him an ATG IMO. Also we don't know too much about his opponents so they could be really good wins.

 

Perhaps, but Jofre was one of the few who appeared in all-time lists during his reign (as rare as rocking horse **** with the old arses, especially during the 1960s). The 'best pfp since Sugar Ray' was bandied about quite often and he was generally acknowledged as the best pfp fighter in the sport for the first half of the 60s. Boxing Illustrated on its 15 anniversary, listed him as the #1 fighter since their first issue (1958ish) which is high cotton by any standards. If anything his stock may have fallen a little in recent years (because there'll always be lists that give a fair percentage of ranking due "fame", which is sad).
