I was just watching some HL of Brown, and he was great, looks really good on film...... BW bout 15 rounds Who and why ?? This is my dream fight at Bantamweight......
Brown does look good on film Vic. The first Hispanic champion, wasn't he? With those long arms, his height...power and rough dirty tactics that he was capable of, he would have been a very tough, formidable foe for the man I consider, along with his nemisis Fighting Harada,..Eder Jofre. I think you might have seen a fight similar to jofre's 126 lb title winning fight vs Jose Legra..although Brown was better than Legra. I can envision a long, hard climb up the ladder for about 6 rounds or so for Jofre, as he tries to get inside those long, punishing arms of Brown..then the fight would take it's shape with Jofre scoring to the body and strafing the head once in a while too. I think the fight would shift to Jofre's side in the latter rounds and he would collect the last three rounds to take a decision. Knockdowns...at least one each could have been shared by both men, and I'm really not trying to downgrade Brown, but Jofre was the premier bantam of all time in my view..again, along with Harada. Jofre W15 Brown...with a possible rematch, which I won't speculate on now..
Vic, I was alluding to the Legra fight...Jofre went down in the 3rd (?) before he regrouped to win the decision...but that was at featherweight, and after he was out of the boxing scene for a while after the Harada fights...i think he was more dynamic at bantamweight..and at his 118 peak, it's possible he could have stopped Brown in the later rounds.
The aggressive Jofre could potentially outwork Brown but it would be nothing pretty even if he does. 7 inch height and 10 inch reach advantages can be quite decisive. Jofre would have great difficulty getting past that.
Yes, he was more dynamic, faster, with better footwork at bantamweight...... Legra is a good comparison with Al Brown... they have interesting stylistic similarities.....
Hard to really assess Brown in these kind of matchups, without having actually seen him tested against other high quality bantams. With his extreme height and reach combined with his boxing skill and decent power, he might potentially have been the best H2H bantam ever - but who really knows.
Jofre did have long arms for his height though, and was fairly good at fighting from the outside despite his short stature.
Under normal circumstances he should not have much trouble reaching any bantamweight but Panama Al Brown was not the usual bantamweight. Legra and Caraballo would look short next to him. Brown could be pressured and outworked though. The tough Pete Sanstol gave him quite a bit of trouble. http://boxrec.com/media/index.php?title=Fight:23087
I like Jofre, he is my numero uno at this weight. Brown was great but his opposition was not sterling, imo. Jofre by dec.
