Eder Jofre vs. Wilfredo Gomez

What this is imo , is most probably the greatest ever 122 pounder against my number 2 (but maybe he is number 1?) 118 pounder ever. Jofre actually proved himself at 126 so maybe this isnt too much in favour of Gomez in terms of unfair size advantage, but in their absolute primes Gomez is more comfortable at the weight and naturally bigger.

Gomez was one of the all time great punchers, unreal power. Jofre was said to have been a man that could do it all in the ring, maybe one of the best pfp h2h ever? Some here question his resume, but i dont hold much against him. Anyway, i'd pick Gomez because its at 122, but i think Jofre was the greater. In the matchup i think Gomez wins a decision in which his extra strength edges a few close reounds, but he's gettin outboxed before he digs in deep.

 

At 122lbs I see this going to Gomez probably late KO.

 

Jofre. Even going against the grain and probably going against what I'd have said if asked a couple months ago. Jofre was less powerful, and Gomez was a brilliant finisher, but Jofre was a better fighter I think overall, even while Wilfredo looked smoother at times. Wilfredo was slick, very much so at times, but as slick as he looked at times, he was also very far from unhittable. In fact he wouldn't slip under punches or show as good side to side head movement as he simply showed a very good ability to lean away from them during exchanges. He could be hit, and was quite often. He was given hell and dropped in his prime at 122 according to what I understand by a very tough Korean by the name of Dong Kyun Yum. Jofre had a fantastic two fisted style, he could bang with the best and box with the best. Good jab, good guard, but I think he'd actually outdo Gomez in the trenches when the going gets rough. It'd be a very tough fight, probably on the level of Gomez's war with Pintor, but I honestly think Jofre gets the better of it in the exchanges, even though some may think Gomez was better to watch at times against the competition he faced.

And some may be swayed by his win over Zarate. But Jofre matches up much better I think.

 

This is a matchup I've never thought of before. What a damned fight between two great fighters! I have to admit I can't decide who would win this one, so I guess I'll just read you guy's comments before it comes to me.

 

Pea, Gomez massacred Yum.That was one of his most impressive performances against a good fighter.

However, he did get dropped early on and Yum was not a puncher.

 

I must have him mistaken for someone else then, because from what I understand one of the Asian fighters he faced gave him hell. I know Kobayashi ran him close, but I thought it was another. From what I heard anyway.

 

I'm pretty positive that was the one. The closeness of the fight must've been exagerrated then due to the KD. But I know this to be the fighter because I got this info from reading up on Soo Hwan Hong, and he holds a win over Yum, who in turn KD'd Gomez.

 

I don't think Yum won more than a round or two.He was a pure boxer who mainly just stuck to the jab.It didn't work at all for him.

Off-hand i can't think of any real tough back and forth fights Gomez had at 122, pre-sanchez.

That could be attributed to a lot of the fighters being quite poor.

 

Do you suppose there was any truth to Zarate's claims of being sick, or do you just suppose he was a bad matchup for him?

I think Jofre would give him a much better fight, and take him out of his game at times. He wouldn't be outboxing Jofre like he did so many others, he'd be getting tagged often, and if drawn into a war, I don't honestly see him having the edge other than power. I'm more impressed by Jofre's ability to bang than Gomez's, as Gomez tends to get hit clean too often when trading blows. Jofre's guard is better.

 

Jofre's an incredible Bantamweight but i think Gomez is just too good and strong at Jr Feather.
