I think the philosophy is that the longer we take, the more time it will give for everyone to tune in.

Unfortunately, they don't take into account people losing interest and tuning out. And it's hard to plan to see some sport's if you can only hazard a guess that it will take place somewhere in a 4 hour window... People's attention span and patience is barely a few minutes, let alone hours and hours.
