Eduardo Amil Mancito vs. Jhon Damas Gemino, 10 rounds @ super featherweight

 

Both tough and well-traveled 32-year-old Pinoy journeymen are coming directly off stoppage losses to lefties - Eduardo Amil "The Nightmare" Mancito to British southpaw James "Jazza" Dickens in Dubai last September and Jhon Damas "The Disaster" Gemino to countryman Jerald "Truman" Into nearly eleven months ago. They are both nonetheless vying for the vacant PBF super featherweight title last held by Jestine Alcoseba "Golden Punch" Tesoro before he vacated to challenge (unsuccessfully) for the GAB Youth title in the same weight class.

 

This would be the biggest victory - domestic or otherwise - of Mancito's career. As for Gemino, it would be by far his most important since snatching Toka Kahn Clary's zero way back in 2016.

 

Round 1

They exchange jabs while circling. Right on the body from Gemino. A few high swatting hooks from Mancito. Gemino is pushed into the ropes and hit with a body shot that strays low a minute into the contest. He flops onto the ground and proceeds to spend the next three minutes gyrating and writhing in pain. Mancito goes to a neutral corner and bows profusely in apology.

Time in.

Sporting glove touch. Mancito is first to extend his jab. Roping it out loose, feeling out. Ref warns them about head clashes almost instantaneously as they begin their first exchange. Mancito with a sidestep swatting high hook. Gemino moving laterally left, pumping out a steady jab aimed at the forehead and caught on the gloves. Mancito is bending over and swooning away from Gemino's jab after firing his own. Mancito with another hook up top. Another. Gemino trying to walk the taller man down, walking into hooks.

That is damn fine matchmaking.

 

Round 2

Mancito is squatting and tossing long jabs at the belt line of Gemino. Mancito is warned to keep the punches up. Gemino stepping in, loading up on looping right hands as Mancito sits on the ropes and buoys himself into an escaping sprint past Gemino. They grind together after both swinging & missing and the ref breaks them apart with neither man working on the inside. Heavy right uppercut downstairs by Gemino. Mancito has his left arm trapped but drills a right hand down into Gemino's ribs. They clinch and nestle into a corner. Ref extricates them. Mid range jabs traded. Gemino ducks, comes up, ducks again, twats Mancito with a hook. Mancito goes for a low jab and just barely ducks under a counter left hook from Gemino. Mancito ducks and dives in, tying up as Gemino walks him into a corner.

Round 3

Mancito is now coming forward and whipping his own left hooks to beat Gemino to the punch, literally. Rough clinch, ref breaks it up. Both men standing off at short distance, staring at each other, jabbing to look for holes in each other's defense, occasionally winging big hooks and getting arm-parried. Prolonged stalemate in the middle of the ring until Mancito ducks and flurries on the body before slinking outside again. Gemino with a massive piston of a right hand on the chest, partially blocked but skewering Mancito into the ropes. Flurry downstairs and hook up top by Mancito to escape. Mancito crashing into Gemino flying in with right hands, both men flailing after the collisions until the ref disentangles them.

10-9 Mancito, close, too low output from Gemino though he's clearly the physically stronger man.

29-28 Mancito

 

Round 4

Mancito is adopting a Philly shell now, slipping Gemino's jabs and responding with uppercuts and pull-counters. One strays low and Gemino is crawling on all fours in agony. Ref gives him some recuperation time and docks a point from Mancito. Gemino sitting in a corner squinting in pain and kicking his legs convulsively. Must have caught him at just the wrong angle to penetrate his cup and inflict massive damage - or he's simply overacting. Long time passing now - we might be heading to a NC if this keeps up much longer. Ref looking antsy wanting to know if Gemino is ready to go. Finally we resume. Mancito is jabbing up top and shooting right crosses low (but still above the belt, bein careful now). Gemino flinching away from Mancito's jab, not throwing anything of his own. Big telegraphed right by Gemino, with Mancito falling back against the ropes to dodge, bouncing off them and resetting behind Gemino. Lazy jab by Gemino countered with an uppercut on the stomach and left hook on the chin by Mancito as he pushes off the ropes. Mancito setting traps, facing up square to Gemino and then abruptly twisting around and bending aside to load up counter hooks from a crouch.

Round 5

Mancito is jabbing the body from a squat. Gemino starts mirroring him and doing the same. Mancito with jabs on the face now as Gemino is lunging in. Mancito ducking Gemino's slower jabs or twitching his neck to move his head out of reach. Mancito scoring with head jabs from outside; Gemino isn't. Wild scything body flurry from Mancito before resuming his Philly shell. Gemino ambling up to him in his own, more herky-jerky low-left stance. Gemino jabs the body and then gallops in to load up a power shot but Mancito pushes into him so they just collide instead.

Round 6

Mancito is throwing lead left hooks and then slamming down with overhand rights, keeping Gemino from rushing in. Mancito connects on a hook around the guard, then pops Gemino in the face with a double jab while circling. Gemino pressuring behind a high guard but not throwing, clipped frequently with hooks making at least partial legal scoring contact on his ear. Gemino finally opens up with some power salvos but fails to keep Mancito pinned on the ropes. Mancito turns the tables and now has Gemino against the ropes, throwing combos. Mancito walks into a jab and scores some body shots with his free arm while the other is trapped. Face jabs traded, Mancito's scoring first & more explosively.

Round 7

Mancito is doubling jabs up top from a safe leaned-away distance, then plugging the gut of Gemino with straight rights. Mancito now switching it up, spiraling his upper body in & down while throwing blind hooks. Gemino shuffling toward his opponent, sometimes doing a quick reverse foxtrot to reset, but mustering very little offense. Clinch and some kind of foul committed - big-backed ref kind of blocking the camera view. Either a butt or foul. Ref gestures to his crotch and docks another point from Mancito - guess that answers that. Gemino taking his time again, doing high knee lifts and stomping his feet down to get the blood flowing to his nether regions. Mancito looks kind of pissed off waiting in his corner. Assuming by his reaction that it was a kind of borderline shot and that less well-conditioned Gemino is maybe doing a bit of the old soccer flop to buy himself time. We start up once more and Gemino comes forth aggressively with a double jab but soon runs out of ideas, watching Mancito and freezing up for long stretches.

Round 8

Mancito is flicking jabs off the hip, his fists paperclipping the middle of his chest. Gemino swoops in with a body jab and tries ripping a roundhouse right on the body, but is caught on Mancito's left elbow. Gemino is spun onto the ropes and slapped with a light hook across the brow as Mancito collapses into him in a clinch, with Gemino grinning appreciatively. Nice shovel hook by Gemino scooting his lead foot forward, his best shot in a while. Mancito is standing his ground now, jabbing between Gemino's eyes. Shallow right uppercut on the belt line by Mancito. Gemino unable to close the distance, just posing and staring at Mancito. Double jab stepping in by Mancito. Jab by Mancito, with a quick swatting counter hook by Gemino falling just short, and itself countered by another Mancito jab. Hook by Mancito.

Round 9

Mancito is using the full ring now, on his bike a bit, throwing stay-away flurries. Gemino cruising in closer, landing some hooks. Mancito's gloves come un-taped. Quick pause for the corner to fix it. Time in. Gemino walks into a series of left & right hooks, caught flush and exaggeratedly lolling his neck around while stepping back as though pantomiming he were badly hurt, with a smirk. Mancito stays composed and continues to circle and pop jabs in the face carefully. Another re-taping required on Mancito's left glove. Ref puts him in a neutral corner as now Gemino needs his own corner to retape his gloves. Boys are really doing a number on those mitts. Time in. Hard jabs by Mancito. Gemino charges in, pump-faking a double jab on the body and trying a right hand up top but getting smothered as Mancito steps into him.
