You don't often hear mention of the padre of both "Mikey" & "Robert" (aka Miguel Ángel García Cortéz and Roberto García Cortéz) when discussing recent great coaches. Even before the pair of American born sons made their respective marks on the sport - with the former debuting in 2006 and the his older brother, nicknamed "Grandpa", retiring from the pros and taking up the reins of training fighters himself - Eduardo had guided the both the latter and their fellow Oxnard native Fernando Javier "El Feroz" Vargas (both in 1998, in the span of ten months). All in all, Eduardo had a hand - as either chief second of member of the corner team at La Colonia Boxing Club, taking more of a backseat to Roberto in old age - in the championship successes of Vargas, the García bros, Victor Ortíz, Brandon Ríos, Mia St. John, and Brian Viloria. Here's a panegyric to him penned by none other than Mikey himself, back in 2018: https://www.theplayerstribune.com/articles/mikey-garcia-boxing-the-godfather He's obviously behind the likes of Arturo "Cuyo" Hernández, Ignacio "Nacho" Beristáin, and Falleció Rodolfo “Rudy” Pérez- but could arguably be duking it out with, say, a Roberto Alcazar for a spot on the Mt. Rushmore of Mexican entrenadores.
What a fantastic letter by Mikey. After reading it I am more surprised than ever that Mikey came is so soft and physically unprepared for the Sandor Martin fight. Thanks for psoting.
Anyone remember Danny Garcia, the other son? (Not THAT Danny Garcia) Think he trained Victor Ortiz for the Mayweather fight and a big part of the 24/7 was how he had fallen out with his brothers. Seems to never be mentioned these days.
Well, the article does also mention something that had been hanging around him like a dark cloud for most of his career - I myself had mentioned it many times over the years. It was long believed that he was never a fan of boxing himself (as in-ring participant least of all) which he basically confirmed here. That deep into his campaign, having been pressed into serice by family pressure in the first place, and doing well for himself but facing chronic weight-making troubles pushing him involuntarily to a fourth weight division, entering his mid-thirties...I can see what little passion he started with being completely depleted in camp.
"Patriarch". Clearly, you havent taken a womens studies (although that was over 10 years ago and I believe the proper term now is "gender studies" so they dont offend trans) course at a Liberal Arts University like I have. That's a bad word and big time no, no. We are supposed to admonish the patriarchs and shame them. Elderly men who have earned the respect of their clan and lead them are oppressive.
