This globe-trotter from Mississippi, who grew up in Ohio and turned pro out of there, went 80-46-3, fighting basically anyone and everyone, anywhere and everywhere, in the welterweight range. He notched 58 known KO wins and 20-something KO losses. He knocked out Jose Napoles and Carlos Hernandez (and was KO’d by them). Beat Eddie Perkins and Don Jordan and Battling Torres and Charley Tombstone Smith among many others who floated in and around the world title scene. Never got a title shot, and his record is full of runs of wins and losses as he ran hot and cold. (Perhaps often coming up short on the road as he was regularly the ‘opponent’ brought in to fight the local guy.) He seemed to set up residencies in various places and fight there for a while, pack up his things and move on. Started on the Midwest circuit. Later had stints out West and in Hawaii. Go down to Mexico for a while, then pop up somewhere else. Fought in the UK, Argentina and Venezuela. I’m probably missing some places. He claimed to have had more than 200 fights, many lost to history, and I’m inclined to believe him as he often popped up in obscure places where there hasn’t been full research (or maybe there was just no coverage) and probably had bouts that took place in between the recorded ones. Not sure if I’ve ever come across as varied a resume with so many big names that included top-notch wins as well as curious defeats. What can the good folks of Classic Forum tell me about this obscure international man of mystery?
Just checked the book on Dave Charnley who fought LC Morgan. Fight report says that Morgan was doing very well in the fitst two rounds, but in the third Charnley landed a pair of left hooks, and that was that.
