Only heard about this guy today, from what I've read and the few snippets of fights i've seen he looks very good. Could anyone recommend me some fights to watch? I did read this great article: http://www.eastsideboxing.com/weblog/news.php?p=24102&more=1 only problem is it's dated 2010 so I'd imagine a bit has changed since then..
Watch him against Gallo Estrada the guy he doesn't want to rematch, his toughest test yet, and he is only 24, was 22 when he fought chocolatito
A recent Anson Wainwright interview suggests he wants that fight, after the Yaegashi fight. He basically said "I gave Estrada a chance to fight me, I'd like the same if it would be possible". Amazingl fighter, has it all. He did fight a little bit stupidly against Gallo but...it made for an awesome fight.
He's a great boxer. I don't think anybody dislikes Roman the way he fights with his activity and consistent entertainment. By the resume, he is worthy of the lofty rankings people give him. Undefeated through 39 fights and a two division titlist... Not his fault, but a criticism would be that he has a lot of activity that I wish was traded for slightly more quality matches. Still, he holds these big wins: 08- TKO4 Yutaka Niida 09- UD12 Katsunari Takayama 12- KO4 Ramon Garcia 12- UD12 Juan Francisco Estrada 13- TKO7 Francisco Rodriguez Jr. He's also got a lot of known journeyman-fringe contenders in Manuel Vargas, Omar Soto, Omar Salado, Francisco Rosas X2, Oscar Blanquet, and Ronald Barrera. For his two divisions he has competed in and dominated (105, 108...), Roman has a great resume.
The Estrada win just looks better and better in retrospect. Gonzalez has been compared to Arguello and Finito Lopez. But he actually reminds me most of a longer, taller prime Rafa Marquez. There's also something Barrera esque about him.
