Langford was a once in a generation type of fighter. To call him small as a heavyweight was not accurate. Sam was a very compact man built a bit like a modern day NFL football player. His shoulders were broad, and his arms for a man who stood 56 were very long. Outside of height you could compare him favorably in some areas vs. heavyweight champions up to around 1960. Sam was a skilled fighter on offense with fast hands. He liked to press the action. He could KO a man up close or at a distance. Langfords heart and stamina to fight 20+ hard rounds was rare. Sam could floored every now and then, but counting him out in his prime is something that did not happen. Sam wasnt much for defense. A slick jabber mover type would give him some trouble. Langford has filmed matches with Lang, Flynn, and Jeannette. He also has work out clips, which arent so easy to come by that I own. Some old time managers and historians felt he was an all timer, capable of taking out Joe Louis. It's a shame he never got a crack at the lineal title. Johnson avoided the match.
