Any information you can offer would be very appreciated, as he's a fighter I really want to learn more about, and he doesn't really get discussed on these boards. So far, all the research I've done on him has been on Wikipedia and a few other sources. Here's the things that stand out to me. -Was able to floor Young Stribling in sparring, a very impressive feat given that he was only a LHW -Maxie Rosenbloom handed him his first loss in a spilt decision -He was beaten by Melio Bettina in his only title bout. -Knocked out Bob Olin and Lou Brouillard. Brouillard never did much above middleweight, but Olin would go on to become LHW champ. -KO'd by John Henry Lewis in three rounds. -Was able to score two victories against Jersey Joe Walcott, one by knockout, and the other by decision. These easily stand out as his best wins for me. Overall, seems like a pretty good career to me, despite never becoming champ. How would you rate him, and are there any ATG light heavy's you see him beating?
Hard to say what you see him doing when there's not a lot to see. But he definitely lived a hard luck story. Not long before his only world title fight he was stabbed, I can't remember off the top of my head if it was by a woman or over a woman, but one or the other...anyway, he supposedly hadn't recovered by the time of his beating by BB for the title. One world title shot and he's carrying a serious injury into training. Brouillard, he made his mark at LHW, certainly a decent scalp to take by KO. JHL smashed him though.
He is an enigma wrapped in a puzzle. He is one of those fighters that gets glowing testimonials from every opponent, but you can't quite match the testimonials to his record.
Some writers claimed he'd been fighting even longer than the official record and was a bit older too ... maybe he was a bit more experienced than he made out when he got that gig as Stribling sparring partner .. .. but such stories are common place. And wasn't there more than one Tiger Jack Fox ? Or was that Gorilla Jones ? :huh (zoological names confusion ..)
Despite the name was neither an actual tiger or a fox. And I have my suspicions on the jack part as well.
