Okay. I stayed up to watch Hatton fight Mayweather. I'm British, and unlike 90% of british people watching the fight, I liked boxing even before one of our own was part of the biggest bout of the year. Still, despite being really impressive by Mayweather's display, I struggle to understand why there is sudden talks of Mayweather being "this and that" after tonight. Why does beating an over rated Ricky Hatton place you among the all time greats? I understand his accomplishments, winning 5 world titles, but his resume doesn't qualify as ATG status, does it? His best wins vs unbeaten prime Ricky Hatton, who was underdog before the fight any how, past his best de la hoya (split decision), Judah (knocked out by Tyzu), and Castillo (as someone mentioned, Chavez's sparring partner). In my opinion, Mayweather isn't any better now that he has beaten Ricky Hatton, who looked over eager and sloppy in the bout. Floyd Mayweather should be fighting the likes of Paul Williams, Cotto, and maybe even Margarito to backup his corners claims that he is as good as Robinson and Ali.
This right here really nullifies your post. How are you not any better after delivering the KO to a champion, undefeated, prime fighter?
The point is, Mayweather's camp makes all these claims of how good he is, but instead of striving to prove it by taking on the best in the Welterweight division, he fights Ricky. Hatton's only other fight at that weight I felt he lost. I'll just ask you out right: Do you think beating ricky hatton by KO in Round 10 places you among the all time greats, and why?
It doesnt in itself. Floyd had that claim before this fight. In this fight he just proved it more, by the way he dealt with a an awkward, undefeated, good fighter and KTFO.
1. Yes, this is the first Floyd fight I've seen live and I was thoroughly impressed. I've seen a lot of his other fights on the Internet. Okay, so in your mind destroying Diego Corrales puts you among the greatest of all time? That's what I'm asking, why does Floyd deserve that privilege when his resume isn't that impressive? I remember showing respect by saying I was impressed by his display, I'm just questioning how important this victory really is for his legacy, that's all.
One thing I'll say is that the mayweathers think all their opponents are 'club fighters'. yet think beating them makes Floyd great? Personally, I feel he has the talent to beat anybody, but his stats are just pretty and on closer inspection you see at alot of the divisions he's taken the lowest risk/highest profit fights. That is not the attitude of a great, being great is about more than just skills.....
All I can say is the list of fighters he's so called ducked, and the list of fighters he has to beat to call himself atg are both beginning to look a little ridiculous. Not saying Hatton is an ATG but theres no one on those two lists much better than Hatton is. So after a really nice dominating performance capped off by a k.o. It kinda makes those "HE has to fight Cotto" threads a little less credible. I think it would be nice if he exposed Cotto's chin, and added another victory to the record, but he can retire right now with nothing to prove imo
I agree. I'm not doubting Mayweathers ability, I just don't think he's took the hardest fights out there during his career. For that reason, he ain't no ATG.imo
Selfkil... To be honest with you, yes Ricky was overrated. But the same will be said about anyone Floyd fights. Ricky Hatton, Paul Williams, Margo. These names are all interchangable. That goes for the new HBO DARLING as well,COTTO, which is my favorite boxer.
Exactly, everyone here assumes us Hatton fans thought he was going to win....I predicted a late KO for Floyd, in fact the fight went exactly as I saw it.....
No, its a combination of his whole career that puts him certainly within the top 30, arguably top 20. The Corrales win was after coming off a very impressive reign at super featherweight (one of the best 130 pounders ever). Since beat the no. 1 lightweight Castillo twice, Gatti for the light-welterweight title, Judah and Baldomir (undisputed champ at the time) for the welterweight title, and Dela Hoya for the 154 title. Now a prime unbeaten Ricky Hatton... Very good resume, no matter how you put it. Add Cotto; top 20 for me.
Coto would be worse if you ask me he puts a slow flat footed pressure on and would allow Floyd to really pick his shots...Hatton put on fast pressure smothered Floyd another fighter probally gives into Hatton but Floyd is that good...Cotto on the other hand....oh my goodness...that man eats so many punches its not funny.....he must have a steady diet of leather in his training.
