I've seen a few of his scraps.Including his dismantling of Livingstone Ramble. Just how good was he?In the light of all the other 135 pounds ATGs?
I don't think he achieved enough to be considered an ATG LW, but he certainly had ATG LW power. He's ranked #39 all time based on fights contested at LW on this well researched list - https://tss.ib.tv/boxing/featured-b...-50-greatest-lightweights-time-part-two-40-31
Arguably Top 5 hardest hitters at 135, especially with the way he stopped Bramble fresh off his win over Mancini. Rosario was an explosive boxer-puncher, good counter puncher, nice movement, excellent footwork, and a heart of a lion. Early in his career he showed to have good all round skills but like with most hard punchers who initially boxed more to set up their KOs Rosario fell too much in love with his power later on, neglected his boxing skills and defense, and chose to fight more inside too often for his own good. His flaw was his durability and lack of recovery when hurt bad which has led to getting stopped in most of losses. Despite his durability issues Rosario was surprisingly never dropped and was always stopped on his feet. His only decision loss was a close loss to Hector Camacho whom he badly hurt and supposedly changed his style for the rest of his career. He falls short of ATG status but definitely a worthy HOFer. A very exciting all action fighter was Rosario. Always likened him as a LW version of Julian Jackson.
Rosario was really very good at times and delivered a lot of excitement. I was so happy when he seemed to turn back the clock and upset Loreto Garza. Then Hiranaka just wiped him out, and nobody saw that coming. But that was sort of how his whole career went. He'd look amazing, then lose or barely get by. Look amazing, then lose or barely get by. Which made for a lot of entertaining nights, but as far as being great ... I don't know.
Good call on that one. I forgot that Rosario does get dropped in that fight and then proceeds to knock down Randall in the same round. Very good round in an otherwise fairly one sided fight in favor of Randall.
Rosario was like a rollercoaster, and it's not only about his training schedule nor fight competition/schedule issues, it's from his style and physicality. He started as a balanced boxer punchers, good all around but starts to rely on his power way more, abandoning all the previous skills and just trying to get one good punch on the inside(despite his recovery and clinch skills being 0)
Edwin Rosario was exciting to watch because he had a lot of heart and pressed the action. His punching power was well above average at 135 and he beat some good opponents. Good offensive skills, decent footwork and fast hands. His defense and shaky chin were his biggest pitfalls
A well researched list for sure. Although, i do not necessarily agree with some of the placements of fighters. For example, I would certainly have Julio Cesar Chavez higher. (He is not only listed too low, but, they have him several spots below Camacho. I just can't reconcile that under any analysis)
I only have a top 20 at LW and my ordering is different to that of Matt's, too. The key is to understand the criteria, which is that it's a LW list based solely on fights at LW. Chavez is ranked behind fighters at LW, based solely on their respective LW resumes, that he'd rank ahead of based on their entire career fights contested in all weight divisions.
The Bramble win is probably his most perfectly realized performance. It may be the 1 fight (@ least @the world class level) where he put all of his tools together, making full use of his footwork & defensive skill along w/ his power. This content is protected
His power was legit for sure. Bramble was durable and Rosario's power just dismantled him rather easily and he penetrated Bramble's defenses well.. Had he beaten Camacho it would have helped him be that level he never reached. He was an underachiever I think due to weight issues and distractions probably. I thought he could have been an all time great for sure.. Positioning his feet as I can see in my head his foot pivots which were unique and setting up his punches. Unique fighter. I enjoyed seeing him fight everytime.. That power.. Might also be underrated power. He did so well 3 time champ wasn't he? But he still was an underachiever to me, That is how I see Edwin.
