Admittedly, yesterday was the first time I got to see the much talked about Lightweight Edwin Valero. Marco Antonio Barrera has spoke very highly of him, touting him as the man to defeat Manny Pacquiao, and he is revered on East side Boxing for being a seriously harder hitter. In any event, I decided not to get caught in the hype and would just wait and see until I finally got the opportunity to see the man fight in the professional ring until I made any judgement. In order to put his victory in perspective, Pitaula is almost 40 years of age, has never beaten any name fighters, and barely threw a punch in the opening round. I hope that does not seem I'm finding ways to discredit Edwin Valero, but I expected more of a fight from such a rough looking customer like Pitalua. He spoke about this being his very last opportunity, but his in ring performance, even prior to the shots he got hit with, did not reflect that at all. I think he will be disappointed in himself when he watches the fight again. Edwin Valero done a job. He has very fast hands, and it would seem as though perhaps his greatest gift other than his devastating power, is his killer instinct. A lot of punchers usually mis opportunites for a stoppage because they cannot finish their opponent when they have them on the hook. Edwin Valero looked like a very competent finisher, but there are a few *****s in his armor that will be punished once he steps up in competition. His chin was in the air, and at times he seemed almost to composed. He needs to keep his hands up at all times, and he seems to be lacking in technique. I throughly expect him to get better of these C level fighters that he has been consistantly knocking out, but the division he is campaigning in is packed with talent. Fighting a name opponent like Juan Manuel Marquez will require more than what he brought to the table on the Lightweight Lightning card. With that said, Edwin Valero could have done nothing more than what he did last night. He stopped an opponent who he was supposed to beat, but Pitalua is revered as being a tough customer. We saw no evidence of that last night, and until he steps up his competition, I'll refrain from using the word "special" and "great" when discussing Edwin Valero as a professional fighter. Gooduck to him.
I'm not convinced. Edwin Valero has not one notable win on his record, and he became World Champion by beating a 40 year old C level fighter, who also has not one notable win on his record. The fact people want him to fight Juan Manuel Marquez next is pure comedy. He is not ready for that, yet.
Again, who has Mosquera beaten? Nobody of note. Edwin Valero is not a "special" fighter yet, he has to prove his abilities against truly great fighters in order to be revered like that. He is not ready for Juan Manuel Marquez. He should be looking to fight a Michael Katsidis.
^^ Puhhahah KATSIDIS?? are u kidding? That journeyman dont belong in the same ring as Valero as he would get beatdown and dominated.. He might get a brain bleed once valero is done with him and im not even exagerrating. Valero dominates him.. Please dont put Katsidis and Valero in the same sentence.
I didn't make the ''Valero is speacial fighter'' thread and neither do I believe he is ready for Marquez but I give him credit. He is a good fighter, not even that close to ''prospect'' level.
Valero would essentially be stepping up in competition if he was to fight Michael Katsidis. As I suspected, Valero is being overrated on the back of impressive wins over not so impressive opposition. John Mugabi, anyone?
P4P, Loco Mosquera is a much more dangerous and the higher caliber opponent than KAtsidis.. Fighting katsidis isn't a stepup imo.
Yes he's just a little more accomplished and the fresher fighter but judging by his abiliy, i dont see him as any kind of threat to Valero.. He doesn't pose any kind of challenge.. He lost two of the biggest fights of his life and now is coming off of a win over an over the hill injury prone chavez.. BTW that kat/chavez fight turned out exactly as i imagined.. If valero wants to step up in class, he needs to take on Demarco, Funeka, and even Presscott at the very least.... But not katsidis.. That is not a stepup.
