I've noticed that many here have been quick to write this guy off. Mainly because of the quality of his opposition. But he is a very interesting fighter IMO. He recently appears to be tidier and straighter in his punching. His handspeed is decent. He is all offense, but is very effective at drawing guys into a war. He has that great trait of hitting straight back when hit, much like Pac and MOrrales do. In some ways he reminds of a raw/young Manny Pac. A guy who has a decent chin (not great), excellent power (although he is in love with his power), and who only knows how to fight one way. I think he could potentially be a hard guy to fight. Looking at it objectively, it would seem the top fighters could outbox him. A guy with a good jab especially. However, much like Pac, he could potentially draw you into a war, as he isnt' scared to get hit to land his own punches. His workrate is fairly high, and he is relentless in his attack. I personally will be following his next few fights very closely. I think he could realistically either fall short (exposed), or could prove to be a legitimate top fighter in the division. He does appear to be getting better for what it is worth. I'm not quite ready to write him off as many others have done. His intangibles are tough to measure, but i personally think they are his biggest asset, and are what he can and will rely on against the top dogs of the division. What are your thoughts on him as a fighter???
Unless he improves considerable over his next few fights (which i possible), I expect him to end up in the 'exposed' category you spoke about. Currently he is to reliant on his power and seems most effective when his opponent is tentative. The problem is when he fights better oppositon he'll be facing fighters that aren't afraid to counter him or bring the fight to him. Against Mosquera for example he was backed up a few times and seemingly lost all his effectiveness, against other top fighters this will happen more often. It's because of this i don't see him handling a solid chinned pressure fighter well. He makes alot of mistakes and is seemingly open for counters almost all the time. He pokes his chin out while he punches and has shown no sign of developing headmovement and/or good footwork. Add to this he drops his hands at times and he's just waiting to get outboxed. This wouldn't be as much of a problem if had great handspeed allowing him to get his punches off before his opponents can retaliate (similiar to Roy Jones Jr), unfortunately for him hes not very quick. If he wants to compete with the top-dogs at 130/135, he will have to improve upon his defence and shorten up his punches considerably. He also seems to be in love with his power, this may come back to bite him on the ass when he fights a really solid chinned opponent. When and if this happens he;ll have to learn to adapt and box, something he hasn't shown signs of being able to do (although he hasn't had to yet). He's very raw and has alot of work to go, unless he fixes up his technical deficiencies I don't see him competing with the top dogs.
Excellent post. I agree he will struggle with pressure guys at a top level. You are exaclty right in his technical flaws as well. I'm not sure what it is, but part of me sees this and thinks he is an inevitable failure. Another part thinks his power and intangibles could be the equaliser. He has enough hand speed to still catch the top guys, and enough power to trouble them. If he can prove he has the chin and the heart, he could be a difficult guy to deal with POTENTIALLY. Obviously we need to see him step up first. Still, i won't totally write him off just yet.
There you go . . . you already said it. You call that anticipation due to curiosity . . . that's the only reason why the guy is an interesting fighter. Once he steps up and fight a real and live opponent we will have a very good measuring stick of how far he's gonna go.
Have you seen his last fight? He was clubbing instead of throwing straight punches. Shimada was actually connecting a lot too because all he had to do was throw a straight at the middle and it would always find Valero. I though Valero fouled a lot in that fight. H was using his elbow as a weapon and he even threw a punch when Shimada was clearly down (both hands touching the canvas) which should have been an automatic disqualification ala RJJ.
I like Valero good fun to watch and loves a tear up. IMO he needs a good trainer to calm him down and improve on his Basics.
He's one fighter I think that won't be able to become an elite boxer.. He finally has a license to fight in Texas so he should take the opportunity soon and sign a fight against someone like Barrios or Soto.. Yes, he has power, but he throws looping hooks and if he fights a top fighter the way he's fighting now, he'll be counter-punched easily and could be hit with a lot of straights.. No more fighting in Japan against bums and don't bring that cheap **** over here either, like he did against Shimada..
We must have watched a different fight then. I saw a guy lnding plenty of striaght punches, which were the main part of his offensive arsenal. He practically LIVED off the jab and straight left. I don't know where abouts the clubbing part came from??? He gets sloppy at times yes, and did committ a fowl, although the referee never broke the action, and allowed him to hit his downed opponent.
This guy went from being overrated to underrated. He will be a tough fight for anyone IMO although id favour the elites over him. Id love to see a Soto-Valero fight just to see where this guy really stands. With the departure of MAB, Morales, Pac, Guzman, JMM at 130, this guy would be my favourite to rule the 130lb division.
I consider him a bum with power. And even his power is pretty untested, given his lack of any decent opposition. I expect him to get beaten up and stopped once he steps his comp up. I see nothing that will allow him to last.
I can't wait until (if it happens I guess) Gamboa faces this guy. I really hope he is still undefeated and has his KO record intact, cause Gamboa will absolutely starch him within 3 rounds
Something to keep in mind though... That Pac at one stage of his career, had come off KO losses previously, and had almost been knocked out again vs Hussein, a guy is a gatekeeper at best. Then went on to become a genuine p4p elite. Whilst i don't ever think Valero can be a p4p type fighter, perhaps he can be a legitimate top guy, given time to improve. I think what you can't count out with a guy like this, are his intangibles.
I like Valero. But it would be hilarious if Gamboa with only a handful of fights just starched the guy.
