Yeah, fair enough, the jumping in part is true - and both favor the fast straight right-left-right-left combo (not much variance in terms of doubling up with either hand or mixing in hooks or uppercuts...nor did they often use just the jab or just a power hand lead or just a single 1-2...it was always those fast straight Dragon Ball Z style piston combos for both). He didn't bunny-hop out the way Manny does, though - and their footwork in general was very different.

And yeah, Bobby was just a grinder (and "blow-blow" glutton) - though he did have a bit of the bunny-hop, imitating his brother, and tried copying his defense as well but was just so goddamn sloppy and uncoordinated (not to mention a great deal slower) that it looked a mess.

Nah...I think we got a glimpse of his ceiling.

As impressive a performance as it was I think DeMarco had the feel of about the best sort of fighter Valero would be able to dominate above 130lbs.

He could've knocked over a few paper champs, especially slow or especially weak-chinned or stylistically disadvantaged ones - but he was never beating any elites.

You're a very good poster but I feel you just don't like Valero and are allowing your feelings to influence how you analyze him as fighter.

How can you say we saw his ceiling if he never got to face any elite comp.

I like how every fighter "would of" beat Mayweather but then they get in the ring with him and don't.

  9. Sorry Boxing/Sports Fans.....

But we can’t have it both ways. And in Valero’s case, every way. If you watched him fight and enjoyed doing so, you are (as am I) as complicit as the commissions that sanctioned him to do so after his brain injury. We paid to see a man fight with a serious injury because it pleased us to do so. And the business powers that be did what you should expect ….and made sure to oblige.

When he was driving under the influence, we all looked the other way. When he beat his sister and mother, the authorities looked a little further. So did most of us but, in this matter, it is too often those in power, the police and the judges, who do too little and thus are responsible.

When he cracked his wife’s and collapsed her lung, many if not most were hoping that he could/would be re-habbed. some even wanted to bring him stateside to do so!! As if we have extra visas for wife beaters.

Then he kills her….and some are surprised. Give me the biggest break. This is the story across the board with scum like Valero. Give them an opening and/or a pass and sure enough, they come back for more. Only the more is the battered woman, not them. Not us.

Now he is dead. I am at peace with that. He was going to be incarcerated for ever (or certainly beyond his boxing career) as he should be. His suicide only confirms that the man was sick. His death, no loss.

I personally am sick of that part of our culture that panders to and even celebrates men/women athletes and celebs who do bodily harm to others. They should be held to the same standard as the rest of us….and to which we hold ourselves.

Regardless of the causes, Edwin Valero was a demon in the ring….and a Devil outside.

May the Lord have mercy on the soul of his wife….and , yes, Bob Arum, you should take care of her family. pc

When a man dies before his time and they've done some substantial things......his reputation often becomes sensationalized. Especially with being a world champion in multiple divisions having won 27 times all by knockout. But my memory isn't skewed or warped due to his death.

Valero was the goods.....he was very solid as a boxer....a little wild but that had a lot to do with his power. He would often swing for the fences, throwing caution to the wind and fall off balance. But he could fight a more tame and controlled if necessary.

Valero wouldn't have beaten Floyd or Manny. Both were far too fast and each of these guys possessed qualities that would be hell for Edwin to cope with. The speed is the big thing that Manny and Floyd have over Valero that doesn't give Edwin much of a chance other than a punchers chance to beat either one of these guys. Valero isn't busy enough to cause Floyd trouble picking him and pot shotting him all night......PAC didn't have the power that Valero had but it wasn't lacking either.....especially from 135 down.

Manny would have to be the favorite had they met in their primes based on the explosiveness and speed of Manny. PAC would definitely be at risk becuase of Valero's power, but Valero would be even more susceptible to Manny's offense. Styles make fights.

Floyd fans are funny as hell and DKSAB.

Valero would have ANNIHILATED poor little DUCKWEATHER.

Mayweather is the worst thing that has happened to modern boxing and ducked any guy who would have beaten him. It's easy to be 47-0 when you don't face any real challenges or when you do make them weight drained or ask them to move up 12 lbs.

The list of opponents Mayweather ducked is a who's who of boxing in the 2000's:

Antonio Margarito, Manny Pacquaio, Paul Williams, Erislandy Lara, Vernon Forest, Winky Wright, Sergio Martinez, Shane Mosley(Peak), Oscar Dela Hoya(Peak or Rematch), Kosta Tszyu, Miguel Cotto(Peak), GGG, Keith Thurman(will Duck in 2015) and the list goes on and on.

I saw Valero fight many times. He was too small for Floyd mayweather, I'd imagine Floyd would stop him inside of ten rounds.

Valero was a very fun fighter to watch and had a good amount of power in both hands, but he was a very technically flawed fighter who was also very hittable.

I remember around the time he fought dimarco, HBO was hyping him up as potential opponent for pacman. It would've been fun to watch, but pacman would've gotten him out of there inside of 8 rounds at that juncture in their careers. He was a very good fighter, but not elite whatsoever.
