Curious, but Aussies seems to have imports among their best fighter. Kostya, Darchinyan, Bika. Among the best, only Mundine and Green are pure Aussies.
just the way he carries himself and his act. its what it takes to be a top fighter i guess.... so ive got nothing against him. ill support him all the way. hes had all the bull**** and stuff surrounding him even in his small early fights.
sugar shane, so what? we all came from somewhere else anyway, so i don't see how it matters. does that mean the whole country is tarnished now? for the record australia's boxers in number r probably on par with the whole of africas swimmers. that might explain why.
why get so cut up and defensive about it? its a fact. the point i made. you can even go to boxrec & australias 'top fighters' dont even have aussie flags. i really monitor the success of an aussie fighter, but how they compete on the world stage. this is really why i questioned if kat is the best current aussie fighter.
Australia is a country of imports. Seriously. Do you know which city in the world has the highest Greek population (apart from Athens)? Melbourne. The country is only 200 years old. The longest "pure Aussie" bloodlines you will find go back about 8 generations. They aren't common either. So "being Australian" is less about where you were born, and more about how you identify yourself and how you act. At least, that is how Australians see it - and I guess it's their opinion that counts. Fenech was born in Sydney btw. The best active Australian fighter is Darchinyan. He is probably the only one who has been in the top ten P4P or who looks like they will ever get near it. After that people would argue about whether it is Green, Mundine or Katsidis. Guys who are good enough to pick up a strap, but not good enough to keep it. Which aint great but aint bad either. Back on topic though: Valero would eat Katsidis alive. Katsidis eats punches like noone else and gets cut. Valero has power. That's not a good combination. Katsidis can stay busy but lacks serious power. His biggest assets are heart and stamina. That will only get you so far; especially when your defense is so awful.
Meh. No such thing as 'proper' Aussie. I guess a distinction that makes more sense is where the boxer had their amateur career. For example Zoo had it in Russia. Bika had his in Cameroon. Darchinyan had his in Armenia. Green, Katsidis, Mundine and Fenech were born and raised in Australia, had their amatuer career (excpet Mundine with no amateur career) in Australia. Even guys like Paul Briggs who was born in New Zealand I think was fighting in Australia before turning pro. Johnny Famechon was born in france but moved to Autralia when he was 5 years old. Of those guys Fenech is far and away the most accomplished and recognised. Katsidis is unlikely to ever match his accomplishments.
Maybe he will. Mundine never reached the heights that his talent suggested he might have, and he sure as hell isn't in any hurry to take on meaningful fights. Green is a multi-division champ. That sounds great, but the titles he won were a little humdrum. Still, Katsidis has a bit of work to do to catch up. Green also has the luxury of fighting in one of the most barren divisions in boxing, and has the chance to get a more meaningful strap. Katsidis has got stiffer competition, which will make it harder for him to - on paper - match Green.
