Andre Ward is the epitome of effective but not pretty to watch fighters. Very skilled at what he does but it really takes a lot for me to want to rewatch his fights, outside his performance against Dawson. Wladimir Klitschko is another one like Ward as well. Fighters that were effective with an ugly style but were entertaining has to be Sung Kil Moon and Vic Darchinyan.
I agree. I watched Ward vs Kessler, Froch, Barrera and Abraham a total of once and I’m done. A great fighter no doubt but I’d rather watch Diego Corrales with my time.
He's one of my favorite fighters, so there's that, but I am surprised to see Monzon being shouted out. He was awesome to watch. One of the finer to study. I don't think he's boring by any measure. But we all like different styles I guess this thread is an example.
Some great mentions. The likes of Ward, Hopkins, both Klitshcko’s, Griffith jumped out to me. Hatton also. In fact these are all boring fighters to me for the most part. Calzaghe perhaps? Not a beautiful boxer, sometimes a little sloppy, but oddly, he was often in fun fights. Fenech is another - a lot of rough stuff but also fun to watch.
FMM was terribly boring for me. All the grabbing holding and complaining. Vito Antuofermo perhaps if he had a bit of power but otherwise except for Hagler #1 he was hard to watch for me. Wladimir Klitschko so boring I stopped watching him. Incessant holding was ridiculous. Jack Johnson is just brutal to try an watch Mustafa Hamsho with all his mauling holding ect was very frustrating for me as well Anthony Joshua huge man who fights scared
Aaron Pryor had an ugly herky jerky style but he also had super fast hands and an iron chin. Highly effective but ugly as hell.
Dennis Andries was my first thought. Amazing how he improved with is age, and had the bottle to basically start again in at least his mid 30s, when he came to the States after the Hearns lost. I do not think I was in a minority when I figured he would retire after that defeat. Yet his best years were in front of him...
I think a lot of it just happens to due to Spinks physical build. Someone wrote that he had the upper body of a middleweight, and the legs of a heavyweight. Imo I agree with this, his upper body is quite small, but his legs are very big, and due to the size differential, he maybe just looks more awkward than he actually is. Btw, I just recently, watched his ko of Cooney, and in that 5th round he put on a clinic in combination punching, hitting Cooney from any angle that Cooney tried to block punches.
effective fighters who had styles many didnt like Freddie Welsh jack johnson gene tunney Tommy loughran johnny Kilbane
