I need to be schooled on Paez he's before my time and I haven't found many of his fights on YouTube I've only ever seen his last fight if anyone can point me in the right direction
His fights with Calvin Grove were his breakout performances. Good fight with Tracy Spann, which he won, war with Rafael Ruelas, which he lost. Tough fights with Whitaker and Genaro Hernandez which he lost, controversial fights with Troy Dorsey. He was often in the audience at the fights at the Forum in LA. I've seen him fight many times and can't remember him being in a bad one.
Showman and B+ to A- grade fighter. Really enjoyed his fights, and his efforts for pleasing the crowds.
thanks for the reply I've been interested but have only found highlights of him in a dress and Chavez sr saying he's a clown but a good fighter
He was unorthodox. Not a big hitter but high-volume puncher with A+ conditioning. Because he traded constantly and didn't do a lot of damage due to his own lack of power, Paez was involved in a number of close or controversial decisions. Also, I remember him having an excellent chin and iron will. Could definitely entertain a crowd, lot of charisma and crazy antics (like the dress, odd haircuts, prefight theatrics, etc.) but some of that obscured that fact that he was a balls-to-the-wall fighter who fought with no fear. Hard not to like this guy. EDIT: Quick review of his record shows not so much a great chin but certainly remarkable recuperative powers and resiliency.
Maromero fought at the Forum one night against a kid from Kentucky; he had won't 18 fights if I remember correctly and was very young. Paez moved around with him for a bit then turned to the referee and suggested he stopped the fight, that his opponent was out of his league. When the referee told him to fight, Paez backed the guy to a corner and unloaded a barrage of punches. Not bombs, but slapping punches that the overmatched opponent could not defend against. The referee stopped the fight and nobody got hurt. I see on his record that Paez fought Schoolboy Ramirez and I can't believe I missed that. Between it was a great fight.
