I am shadow boxing and self training. I will join a proper gym soon. I am naturally right handed and prefer to train orthodox. But i have been experimenting fighting southpaw. When i hit the heavybag in a southpaw stance, i can throw hard straight lefts from a southpaw stance. I have naturally very quick hands (previous guys i sparred with a few years ago were shocked by how quick my hands were). So i figured i will be even more dangerous in a southpaw stance due to my natural handspeed. My only issue is that when i am shadow boxing in a southpaw stance and i throw an overhead left or a straight left and fully extend my elbow, my elbow hurts. When i am shadow boxing orthodox, and throw a straight right with full elbow extension, it doesn't hurt. Is this switch hitting worth it or is it a fools errand? Anyone experimented with switch hitting? If so, did you struggle to master a straight left from southpaw stance?
You've probably aggravated it (whether due to bad form since you're not as used to southpaw, or unrelated trauma outside the ring); don't throw anymore until you see an ortho.
Make sure that you're turning the shot over properly. By not turning the shot over your putting a whole lot of pressure in your elbow.
Bronco McCart was a converted south paw. I wish that I had known that while working with him. His hook would leave me ringing for a while. He was one sharp fighter.
