Last August he knocked out Kovalev. Six months later he loses the title by a wide margin in scorecards . In December he had signed a 7 fight deal with ESPN. However his defeat to Kovalev voids the contract. So now he's still with top rank but it is not guaranteed he will stay with them in the future because of his loss to Kovalev in other words him not being champion they might not want him long This content is protected
I actually feel bad for him now.......real humble guy. .....you can tell he cares more about legacy than money ......that's the kind of champions boxing needs
No shame in losing to a game Kovalev. Alvarez will bounce back and probably earn himself another shot at a belt if he can remain focused.
Its pretty hard to beat an in shape , focused , on his game Kovalev . I think Alvarez and his team was counting on meeting the same Kovalev they fought last year and didn't have an answer to Kovalev's movement , output and clever strategy . Kovalev took this fight seriously , new coach and trainer , seemed to be more humble in victory . It's possible Kovalev has rededicated himself to boxing ... it happens . Hope his legal problems don't disrupt his road to living a positive life . Alvarez seems to be able to follow a game plan , possibly needs a new coach to come up with a strategy to defeat Kovalev which won't be easy . I still see Alvarez being dangerous for anyone at 175 , he can't ever be taken lightly . Probably has a good chance of fighting for a belt again soon .
No one went down hill, a better version of Kovalev showed up and did what he should have done the first time.
Alvarez has tasted defeat but that doesn't mean his career is done, one loss means nothing, everyone was writing Kovalev off after the first fight, would be a mistake to write off Alvarez after this one loss too. He obviously has ability, there's plenty of good fights he could be involved in.
Sucks for him that the defeat voided his contract, but he still can be satisfied on how things went. He still caught Kova at the right time the first time, and earlier in his career got lucky to get the nod against Chilemba. I still think he was in on the whole Stevenson step aside deal until the public caught up with it, and forced the WBC (who were also probably in on it) to take action. All in all he probably made a lot of money gor his level, and can probably make a lot more still.
A 1-1 record vs Kovalev, and legitimately at that is nothing to scoff at. He can hang his hat on that.
He's a good fighter: This content is protected He kayoed Kovalev! Yes an unfocused one but even an unfocused one beats most IMO He was a screw up in the second Ward fight & Ward couldn't beat him as convincingly as how Alvarez did! He had to ball bust & clinch him lol I give the guy his due, he got schooled against Kova second time but he was game all the way.. 24-1 & ducked for year's by pimp ..
