They're going right at it. Davis backpedaling or circling to her right but tossing out jabs in multiples and uppercuts on the body. Soto with heavy line drive right hands on Davis' temple and left hooks on her jaw. Davis down, ruled a slip. Soto with a barrage forcing Davis into a corner. Flush hooks on the midriff and mush. Davis showing toughness, eating some bombs. Soto countering with hard rights over the jaw of Davis. Davis flurrying off the ropes and lands some chopping shots on the crown as Soto burrows herself in tight working the body.

Davis remains the only opponent to escape the 1st round against Soto, who is 7-0-0-1 (7).

 

Round 2

Davis boxing better when she moves and unfurls her longer jab, but keeps beaching herself on the ropes where Soto spams right hands over her left arm. Davis has no answer for those rights and keeps remembering that she has to burn rubber as soon as Soto forcefeeds her one. Davis holds. Soto eats an uppercut but even while reeling from it lands a climbing right on the chin of Davis.

Soto is trained by Shaun Rakeem George (a cruiserweight fringe contender from the aughts, best remembered for his upset stoppage of Chris "Rapid Fire" Byrd in Byrd's re-debut in the division after spending fourteen years at HW)

 

10-9 Soto, starting to add left hooks to her repertoire. Davis throwing more in retreat, but arguably landing less (and certainly with much less power)

Davis becomes the first person to carry Soto a scheduled distance.

What the hell, Robin Taylor?! ...I think maybe she was sitting too close to Erdman.

 

Alright, now to watch Taylor and Serrano in their respective 5-minute open workouts..

 

WTF? Taylor wastes her first 90 seconds on the clock just standing there having her coach wrap a tie around the wrist of her glove.

They then break into some very lackadaisical jab-sparring while circling in the middle of the ring. He's throwing more feints with the pads than she is punches. This is lame.

She doesn't throw a serious combination until there's a minute left. Just one. Then her and her coach look at each other, shrug, and begin to de-glove leaving 37 seconds unused.

What's the point of even bothering showing up to put on such a wet fart performance?

Taylor is either shot to hell, or this is mind games to make Serrano think she is and lull her into a false sense of security.

 

...alright, Amanda Serrano in contrast is already shadowboxing, ducking & weaving throwing combos, before her time officially starts.

Snap-turns, 1-2-3-uppercut, constantly jogging in place when not moving or punching (in stark contrast with that lump of mashed potato that occupied the ring before her)

She gives the sparse crowd a full 5+ minutes of uninterrupted action, including synchronized lateral shadowboxing with a team of four girls that I'm assuming she trains (pausing the clock to pose for a group pic and then glove up, before working the mitts).

HARD crisp combos being worked, beyond her scheduled time, until Jake Paul intervenes to say that's enough.

 

Serrano, swearing bullets, breathless, makes a speech about wanting to give back before retiring and not wanting women who come after her to endure the struggle that she and her sister did (sometimes earning as little as $100 or even $50 to fight professionally).

If you came into this a) not Irish and b) without otherwise already having a rooting interest, I don't say how you come away from it not seeing Taylor as the heel and rooting for a Serrano knockout.
