The Dalton Smith thread got me intrigued to how people differentiate between what is elite and what is ‘just’ World Class in professional boxing.

Apply it to Tennis and it’s easy as over the past couple of decades you’ve had Nadal, Federer, Djokovic and Serena as the elite and EVERYONE else on the ATP as world class players. The elite all have resume, longevity, head to head victories, odds defying moments, comebacks from adversity and maintained athleticism over many many years…

I think elite in boxing is a vastly overused term but at the same time, I think boxing fans are quick to write off some really world class fighters and athletes on the grounds that they’re not elite. If they were, elite wouldn’t really exist.

Świątek conquered Coco Gauff and clinched her second French Open title, losing one set en route. She fished the tournament with a 35-match winning streak, matching the longest unbeaten streak since Venus Williams in 2000.
Iga Świątek is the world No.1 which means your world class in tennis a bit like being the P4P No.1 in boxing and she is well on her way to becoming elite, nothing in the boxing world right now matches that.

Nadal, Federer and Djokovic all elite while Andy Murray is probably down as World Class even though he has many notable victories over those three elite players.

The first 3 will go down as the greatest in the world while Murray more likely to be remembered as the greatest Brit.

Elite for me is only the best of the best, true pound for pound superstars, whereas world class are the ones who fight around world title level, win some, lose some.

For example, Mayweather was clearly elite. But Berto, Maidana, Guerrero and Ortiz were not.

Benn has never beat an elite fighter nor has he ever beat a fighter as good as Hatton was.

Elite for me has be where they would be at top 3/5 in any era.

Tennis is a great example as the 3 of fed Nadal and novak would easily be at top at any era of tennis.

Messi, Ronaldo in any football era etc.

As others have said, I would see anyone at title challenger / holder level to be world class, dependent on the strength of the weight class.

Elite is for the few who are that level above. The best of the best.

For example in a recent WW fight. Porter I would class as world class but Crawford elite.

I think Ronaldo and Messi are elite players but world class players are underrated compared to them.

Messi and Ronaldo are amateur compared the greatest.

Despite retiring at the ripe old age of 25, and missing four full years of playing, still a winner of three Ballon D'Ors. Ladies and Gentlemen, Damas y caballeros, I give you ... The Greatest ... Me

    Barrera vs Hamed
    Usyk vs Joshua
    Mayweather vs Hatton

3 clear examples of elites being a level above a world class fighter.
