Elliott Matthews vs. Diego Burton & J.J. McDonagh vs. Michael Nieroda RBR

This is for the British Southern Area 160lb title, 1st defense of Matthews.

Somewhat decent lineage with past holders including Billy Joe Saunders, Darren Barker, Howard Eastman, and early 80's Euro champ Kevin Finnegan...

 

Yep, scheduled for 10 - the rest of the card eight or less. :good (and nothing else has a title at stake)

 

Round 1

Matthews is sticking his long right jab down into the chest of Burton, squatting on the outside and keeping his left up by his chin. Burton shoots a hard right on the chest as Matthews is circling and skimming his back along the ropes and Matthews trips and falls. Legit knockdown, if of the flash variety. Jeff Hinds applies no count. Matthews jabs out the round with Burton jumping in throwing straight flurries.

Round 2

Matthews is sticking the right jab onto the bridge of Burton's nose. Matthews is boxing tall, waving his right glove in spherical motions several inches out in front of himself to parry away the Burton jab. Right hand leads by Burton, batted aside. Jabs stuck in by Matthews while circling, legs splayed and spread apart with knees bent for a low base.

Round 3

Matthews is sticking the right jab and dancing away, shaking his left glove under his chin. Burton flurries Matthews into a corner, putting on pressure winging shots diagonally upward. Burton flaps out a light double jab and charges with a hard right on the chest. Matthews down again to a knee, clutching a rope for balance. Again no count from Hinds. Matthews is up and scoring left hand leads while turning Burton. Right jabs by Matthews from outside. Burton doubles his jab in the air and again attacks the center of the long body of Matthews with a right hand that affects his balance and causes his glove to brush the canvas. No count.

Balance and maybe his chin. At least 2 of 3 of those falls look to have been caused by the punches that came before them, even though all were glancing.

 

Round 4

Matthews is keeping Burton quiet on the outside, moving away, wiping Burton's jab from the air with his right. Feints and right jabs by Matthews as he rocking-chairs his weight foot to foot moving sideways. Right jabs and corkscrew lefts on the body from outside by Matthews, boxing well on the backfoot as Burton just marches in straight lines at him looking for a jab or 1-2.
